Why truthfulness really does matter

Thomas Jefferson had his alleged affair with Sally Hemings. George W. Bush had his 1976 drunken driving arrest. Throughout history, Americans have disagreed about the relevance of politicians’ private missteps. Here’s our view:

Personal integrity matters.

The Weekend World’s front-page story about Coos County Commissioner Kevin Stufflebean has received a lot of attention. Some readers have asked why we poked our noses into a private issue, and why we waited three months to print it.

The answer is, yes, a politician’s personal finances are largely a private matter. That’s why, when Stufflebean filed for Chapter 13 in July, we gave the story minimal treatment on an inside page.

But then we began hearing whispers. Some knowledgeable readers said Stufflebean’s public comments about the bankruptcy didn’t ring true.

So reporter Meghan Walsh began asking questions and requesting records from public agencies. This kind of work takes time. The last bits of information finally came together last week.

Walsh’s findings didn’t paint an encouraging picture. None of Stufflebean’s explanations for his financial distress could be verified. Of the five factors he mentioned at the time, public records cast doubt on all five. Given the chance to explain the discrepancies, he offered unsatisfactory answers.

The question reasonably may be asked: Who cares? No tax money was involved, and Stufflebean wasn’t obliged to explain himself in the first place. If his explanation doesn’t hold water, does it even matter?

In terms of public confidence, it matters a great deal. Character doesn’t switch on and off like a light bulb. A person who values truth generally doesn’t make exceptions for certain subjects or certain situations.

That’s why a public official’s public truthfulness is always relevant — even when the subject matter is private.

Truthfulness?

From a newspaper that continues to print made up hype about a so-called flu epidemic.

May as well scratch the term from the dictionary.

dan milburn wrote on Oct 27, 2009 10:41 AM:

Worth repeating. Public Official means you are constantly under Public scrutney. That's the way of public life. If the public newspaper isn't interested or making inquireys then who is going to? The local pub? The editor "is" involved in local government. That is to the publics advantage. Who else is better suited? Who else has a better means to inform the public. Questions are always healthy for the public. Printing the answers for the "public" is healthy. Public discussion is healthy. What isn't healthy is blaming the newspaper for printing the answers that you might disagree with. The newspaper isn't making this stuff up. You have black and white answers to questions and you have many notable discepencys. You should be very concerned when you have a public official exposing himself as untruthful, inaccurate and obviously incompetent when exposed to inquiry. If you choose to blame the messenger of the facts rather than hold your public official accountable you are making a big mistake. You will be as guilty of misuse of the public's trust as the public official.

I think The World should have used the term "truthiness" instead of "truthfulness" in the headline.

That would have made me LoL!

No matter what side your on it's always the truth. so "let he who is without sin cast the first stone". Only one lived on this earth without sin and they killed him. Remember the Bible tells ua the person on the "Right" is wise and the one on the "Left" is a fool. Makes sense to me........ I really don't give a hoot if Jefferson had an affair. I'm sure none of you have had one, lied, stolen or done anything else to taint your reputation.
God knows I am a sinner but I am forgiven. How about you?

I am not Mrs, Zanni for god's sake. Why even throw that out there? Here is the deal. NO ONE thinks twice about a retired military man collecting military pension and getting a job, or a Dr. having more than one paying practice. I am NOT saying that Jackson is a good Sheriff. I believe quite the contrary. I believe that mistakes can be made by people. Not, just police officers or judges as you seem it infer. I believe that everyone has a different perspective of what the truth is, based on what they saw and what their background is. And thanks BRUTAL TRUTH the same regurgitated information is getting a bit wearing to me too. Her situation seems to apply to EVERYTHING...And I am pretty sure that there are many others around here who would love to go "bankrupt" on the Stufflebean's annual salary.

floyd wrote on Oct 23, 2009 10:23 AM:

After reading the editorial, the editorial board is correct that truthfulness and integrity are critical. This is the first time I can remember that the newspaper has printed an editorial to justify their actions on such a slanderous, biased article. Meghan Walsh and the editorial board should take a close look at their editorial and practice what they preach. It is apparent that those knowledgeable, whispering readers are the same people who pushed for a recall that are talking with Meghan Walsh along with Commissioner Main. Those who read the article with an open mind, can see that the article was strictly focused on making a lair out of Stufflebean, but what it showed me is how the THE WORLD slandered two people, and was not at all completely truthful and left out the majority of the facts and demonstrated a lack of knowledge of the reporter.

Kathleen wrote on Oct 23, 2009 9:23 AM:

To Brutal Truth: I am sincerely sorry if I am offending you.

However, in this situation, talking about our unjust treatment by public officials and law enforcement is entirely pertinent. This very editorial is about integrity, honesty, and character in public officials. Although I do not agree with Megan Walsh's article on Kevin Stufflebean, I do absolutely agree that public officials should possess the highest level of integrity.

Stufflebean's opponent in the next election is Sheriff Jackson. That fact alone makes my blog important.

I have a duty to the citizens of this county to tell my experience with 2 officials responsible for what happened to us. Jackson not only is incompetent as a leader, he is lacking in honesty and trust. He misused the power given to him by the voters.

I believe you may be uncomfortable believing that law enforcement and the legal system could let a citizen down to the extent it did to us. If it happened to us, it could happen to you. Face up to that and vote with knowledge.

The Brutal Truth wrote on Oct 22, 2009 11:55 AM:

Kathleen, it would be GREAT if you would stop turning every article in to a discussion about your & your husband's ordeal.

rambo wrote on Oct 22, 2009 8:12 AM:

Thank you Kathleen.

For letting the people know what really happened.

You have changed my vote.

I also didn't know zanni was collecting his PERS retirement AND HIS POLICE WAGE.

AND ANDY JACKSON DOES THAT TOO.

Just greedy people with a badge.

NOT WHAT I WANT.

Kathleen wrote on Oct 21, 2009 8:40 PM:

Continued:
Actually Coquillian, I was already VERY AWARE that Zanni was the SCINT director at that time. We also knew Zanni was in charge and that at least one of the men was on methamphetamine. We know because the hospital tested him. We know that this man also had a bench warrant for his arrest--for a "methamphetamine" DUII. That's a pretty good "hint" to a competent SCINT director about the nature of the assault. Sure seems easy to understand why we are so OUTRAGED BY ZANNI'S ACTIONS.

We, the victims, had no records. None! In fact, my husband was a physician and the county coroner. All of us said the men were on methamphetamine, but no officer cared, not even the drug expert and SCINT director, Zanni.

The editorial states, "Character doesn’t switch on and off like a light bulb. A person who values truth generally doesn’t make exceptions for certain subjects or certain situations." Zanni allowed us to suffer for a mistake he made--a mistake he knew he made. Zanni is not fit to be sheriff!

And, Mrs. Zanni, I am not going away!

Kathleen wrote on Oct 21, 2009 8:25 PM:

Coquillian or Is It Mrs. Zanni:

I seem to have hit a nerve with you. Zanni may have been the SCINT director at the time, but he was also the officer in charge that night. I have proof--it's like a public record! I suggest you ask Zanni yourself. And, if he lies to you about us, then you will know about his honesty, integrity, and character just as I do. Zanni even testified in court about our case. Gee, I wonder if he told the truth?

SCINT director, hmmmm, sure seems like the Scint director should have been able to figure out that this was a METHAMPHETAMINE CRIME. Instead, the VICTIM was arrested.

coquillian wrote on Oct 21, 2009 12:46 PM:

Kathleen IN BIG LETTERS SO YOU UNDERSTAND I DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR CASE. I DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SAY. And, when faced with voting for a Sheriff, I did NOT vote for Jackson in the first place. I would back Zanni, and what he had to do with your case I will never know as he was the SCINT director at the time. ENOUGH....

nice little statement, but I thought Jefferson's affair with Sally Hemings was proven with DNA evidence?

please look into that and correct the "alleged" - after all, if the 3rd POTUS was sleeping with his slave, we have a right to know!

Kathleen wrote on Oct 21, 2009 8:14 AM:

The paper has gone way too far in "DID HE LIE".

Anyone who has followed my blogs knows exactly where I come down on trust, honesty, integrity, and abuse of power in connection with any public official, especially those in law enforcement or the legal system. However, truthfulness in reporting is equally as important. I feel that Ms. Walsh did not do a through job. Public Records only tell part of the story. I don't believe Meghan Walsh ever even interviewed Kevin Stufflebean on this matter.

I have know Kathe Stufflebean for over 30 years and know information that others may not know or that might not show up on a public record. There are often very private reasons for a bankruptcy.

My heart goes out to Kevin and Kathe. I understand what it feels like to be persecuted and convicted by the press! Hang on and stay strong!

Heck kay we here it is Mark Daily with Coos Bay City Council and SCDC that will be filing with Andy Jackson to defeat Stufflebean. Piece of cake.

All three people have the same thing in common, they all filed bankruptcy. This will be an interesting race.

HappyDay wrote on Oct 20, 2009 8:12 PM:

My blog was censored. It was about the libelous headline "DID HE LIE?" and how a reader could be manipulated to believe "HE DID LIE!". Apparently, I hit a big nerve, because I wrote the blog around 1:00 p.m. yesterday, but its not there tonight.

I do hope the Stufflebeans sue you! That's my wish, not something I know. I find Meghan's hatchet piece to be the most offensive thing I have ever seen in a newspaper. And, WHY is still my question???

I will repeat once again. There are always numerous reasons for financial problems. Many of those reasons are not in a public record nor are they our business! Investigate something that matters!

The Editorial Board says, "But then we began hearing whispers." I wonder if those whispers came from B.M. in the courthouse. I believe I've heard "whispers" that Meghan speaks to him often. Should we investigate?

floyd wrote on Oct 20, 2009 6:13 PM:

Coquillian: Surprsing you would buy into such slander. You of all people who work for the county know how incorrect and inaccurate the world newspaper is and how biased they slant their articles. I have read the article again, and see that they have to many inconsistencies.

Kathleen wrote on Oct 20, 2009 5:19 PM:

So, Coquillian, you really do like honesty in a public official. That's good news--I couldn't tell that from your other blogs. I guess you won't have anyone to vote for then as Sheriff Jackson and Zanni showed neither honesty or integrity in our case. You also might find it offensive that the two double-dippers' incomes may be over the average living wage around here. I don't have a problem with them making a good living, but you seem to care. I've also heard rumors that Sheriff Jackson has even filed bankruptcy. I guess he can't manage his house either!

Justice for All wrote on Oct 20, 2009 1:55 PM:

Stufflebean lied about the road department layoffs, and now it looks like he lied about his bankruptcy. I'm sure glad that so many Coos County citizens are okay with that. Especially because those are probably the only two occasions on which Stufflebean has lied right?

I'm glad that The World is reporting on this, now if only they could apologize for endorsing a "no" vote on his recall.

coquillian wrote on Oct 20, 2009 1:03 PM:

I agree with the editor. And ALL bankruptcy records are in fact public record. Anyone can get a copy. 120k a year is FAR more than the average living wage around here. Mr. Stufflebean will NOT get my vote next time because he doesn't practice honesty. If he can't manage his own house, I don't want him having any effect on mine.

reedsport wrote on Oct 20, 2009 12:28 PM:

Yeah, truth matters-like Dan Rather's invented National Guard story about GW. And the balloon hoax, and the Chamber of Commerce endorsing Global Warming!! And James Carville "helping" the Afghan elections!! LOL :p

clairecat wrote on Oct 20, 2009 12:25 PM:

This is ridiculous. Comparing Jefferson and Bush to Stufflebean..What a joke! Why didn't you list Clinton or the Kennedy's? Nixon? I threw a rock at a stop sign once. Put a big ole dent in it too. I've lost all respect for The World newspaper and their staff. Grow up and report real, true news that applies to people in the community!

Kay wrote on Oct 20, 2009 12:25 PM:

Let me put my Carnak hat on.

SCDC - has a candidate in the wings to run against Kevin ?

Let us all watch and see who it is.

Shallow Al wrote on Oct 20, 2009 12:15 PM:

The Editorial Board makes a good point here. That being truthful as a public servant is a most valued asset.

Along with that, however, being a newspaper requires and demands honesty, integrity, unbiased reporting in a concise fluent manner. It also requires that the subject matter be one in which a reasonable and prudent member of our society would find news-worthy, and an issue for the public to know and understand.
It also appears obvious to me, based on my own personal life experinces, my own personal opinion and judging from the comments received about this story from readers, The World went too far, trying to turn a personal issue into a public matter.

To the Editorial Board: Shame on you.
