Candidates conceal identities to protect jobs

Final interviews were conducted this morning and the Coos County Airport Commission could offer the job of executive director to one of three finalists this afternoon.

“In a perfect world, we’ll have a decision made tomorrow,” Chairman Mike Lehman said Monday evening.

The candidates rubbed elbows with the public Monday evening at the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport terminal, during an event advertised as a chance for the community to meet the contenders.

It was largely attended by airport officials and community leaders, including Sandra Messerle, director of the South Coast Development Council and Hank Hickox, manager of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

The three candidates declined to disclose their names to media, saying they wanted to eliminate any risk of jeopardizing their current positions. Commissioners would not provide their names, either.

However, the applicants talked freely about their experience.

Two men have more than 30 years of airport experience each. One is a business development director of an airport in Daytona Beach, Fla., a position he has held for 11 years.

The other is an airport manager in southern California, a job he has maintained for 10 years.

Another is a woman overseeing three airports in Florida. She has 15 years of airport industry experience and a master’s degree in aviation and aerospace science.

All three said they were drawn to the job because of recreation opportunities afforded by the Oregon Coast. One acknowledged it would constitute a pay raise.

In interviews with commissioners last month, it was disclosed that the new director would make around $100,000 a year.

Commissioners began their search for Executive Director Gary LeTellier’s replacement in early September. They were presented with a list of 20 applicants and whittled it down to three earlier this month.

LeTellier will retire at the end of the year. Officials hope to have his predecessor on board early next month, allowing for several weeks of overlap between the two.

Whoever lands the position will be tasked with improving the northbound service — recently scaled back to one flight per day — and establishing more connecting flights at Portland International Airport. He or she also will be expected to generate more revenue from the airport’s business park by attracting more tenants.

Monday’s function gave commissioners an opportunity to see who among the candidates had the best rapport with the public.

“We have three pretty strong contenders,” said commissioner Jon Barton. “It’s going to boil down to who will be the best fit with the community.”

I wonder if they will hire me? I will do the job for half of what these fools will get paid. I have a college education. I have extensive airport experience. I'm probably not what they are looking for though. I wouldn't rely on government subsidies to attract the worst rated airline in the country. I guess I have a lot to learn.

My first day on the job would be spent moving the Airport to the North Spit. The present location is landlocked. No room for expansion. Second day I would hold drills and landing practice on the Scenic Byway. We'll get a better runway later when we actually have passengers.
The third day we will dedicate the present Airport to the Air National Guard, the Coast Guard and the Boy Scouts of America. When is payday around here?

Mine was just a joke after checking on Steve Pickering I have come to the conclusion that he is not someone I feel would be suited for any position. I would say he has many antisocial tendencies that would rear their ugly head every time someone disagreed with him

I wouldn't vote for Steve Pickering even if he was the last candidate on earth. And as for the good ole boys club I am certainly NOT a fan ... but last time I checked I don't think that Helen was a BOY! But you could always ask her Husband to clarify!

"Killer Bees"... "Reasonless Four". This is fun. Lets come up with names for the smucks at the Port, the Chamber, SCDC, and the SWOYA board. Maybe even a better name then "Good Old Boys" for the whole gang. Oh, let's not forget the # 1 cheerleader, the Editor of this paper. Maybe he should get "Desperado" for his stellar effort to be accepted by the gang.

We have 2 former mayors and I can't remember what Brunnel and Barton did...Anybody know? The people of Coos County keep voting the same clowns into office no matter what they run for.. My Bad! It is called the "Good Ole Boys Club" If you are unhappy, put new faces in office.... Why bother, the same people will get elected everytime...... I doubt this will be printed, because I called these guys "Clowns"..........

Common Sense wrote on Oct 20, 2009 3:56 PM:

Hmmmmm....sure seems like the blind leadin the blind with Chairman Mike Lehman leadin the way, since he picked out clueLESS Executive Director Gary LeTellier in the first place...

P.S. If Jon Barton says these 3 picks are good....WE are in trouble, since he is part of the self serving goodoleboy failed system/problem the area needs to get rid of...

Prediction: More of the same, with another firing down the road (Unless the NEW guy quits before getting fired due to the self serving failed goodoleboy system/problem)...

Steve Pickering wrote on Oct 20, 2009 2:56 PM:

OreCoast and Mark,

Yes, you could have.

Mark Smith wrote on Oct 20, 2009 2:27 PM:

That's funny orecoast007 I was going to say the same thing.

orecoast007 wrote on Oct 20, 2009 1:59 PM:

JS,We could have Steve Pickering on the airport board of commisioners.......

coosbayite wrote on Oct 20, 2009 1:58 PM:

Way! It was in the paper Friday or Saturday, I'm not sure. But, it was there. As for the rubber stamping, that just isn't true. They took lessons that probably shouldn't have been given. The lessons were for flying a large aircraft like the 7XX's. Better screening would have been the proper course to have taken.

clairecat wrote on Oct 20, 2009 1:50 PM:

I wonder how many applicants we'd have if the pay was based on perfromance?

whatintheworld wrote on Oct 20, 2009 1:11 PM:

Would one of you bloggers please tell me how the meet and greet was advertised. My neighbor reads every word in this paper even the punctuation and says no way. Thanks

dan milburn wrote on Oct 20, 2009 12:41 PM:

Just when you think its safe to fly again! Hey "BONE HEADS!" Wake up!!! Candidates from "FLORIDA"!?
These are the airports that trained and rubber stamped the pilots licenses that flew into the trade center on 9-11. No wonder they all job hunting!

js wrote on Oct 20, 2009 12:12 PM:

CB Businessman - Could you be any more negative? Face it a majority of us voted for that board. Deal with it and move on.

c.b. businessman wrote on Oct 20, 2009 11:53 AM:

Great - hopefully the new person will not fit the mold of the "killer bees" - (Benetti, Briggs, Brunnel, and Barton), and we end up with a better "fit" than the previous guy. Good luck to us all.
