North Bend started Friday’s game with visiting Sutherlin on a sour note Friday night and never was able to recover.
Sutherlin’s Dirk Kats returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and North Bend allowed 21 points in the first quarter en route to a 28-6 loss at home.
North Bend dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the Far West League, while Sutherlin improved to 2-0 in the league, with 311 total yards rushing.
North Bend went three-and-out in its first series, and Sutherlin marched down the field to punch in another touchdown, with a 1-yard rush from Nick Bradley.
“They’re a good team,” North Bend quarterback Dalton Iveans said. “They came ready to play.”
Sutherlin wasn’t finished. North Bend fumbled on the first play in its next possession, and Sutherlin didn’t let it go to waste. After taking over at North Bend’s 38 yard line, Brian Andry ran the ball in from 1 yard out to put them up 21-0.
North Bend finally forced Sutherlin to punt early in the second quarter and nearly turned the ball over again with a fumble, but North Bend recovered.
A 27-yard pass from Iveans to Cody Harden gained a big first down, and allowed Iveans to connect with Harden again for a 12-yard touchdown. Ryan Johnson’s kick was blocked.
“We were moving the ball pretty well,” said Iveans, who finished the game passing 7-for-13 for 117 yards. “But we made some key mistakes.
“They capitalized on our mistakes and we didn’t capitalize on theirs.”
Sutherlin ate nearly six minutes off the clock in its next drive, racking up three first downs. North Bend’s defense stepped up to force a field goal attempt, which Kyle Jaukkuri missed from 24 yards out. North Bend took over with less than two minutes to go in the half, but Iveans threw two incomplete passes before punting, to leave the halftime score 21-6.
North Bend opened the second half strong, with four first downs, pushing the ball to the Sutherlin 13-yard line. Iveans threw his only interception of the game, brought down by Sutherlin’s Chris Mock on its own 10 yard line.
North Bend faked a punt on its next possession, but Jake Lucero came up short to turn the ball over on downs at North Bend’s 38.
Sutherlin took over, and proved it could turn North Bend’s mistakes into more points. Bradley scored early in the fourth quarter off a 2-yard run.
But with 11 minutes still on the clock, North Bend pushed hard. Iveans aired the ball out to Travis Perez for a 42-yard reception, and a roughing-the-passer penalty put the ball on the Sutherlin 7-yard line.
North Bend stumbled, turning the ball over on downs, then lost a fumble on its last effort before Sutherlin secured its second league victory.
North Bend still looks toward its first league win, and Iveans said it needs to start during the week.
“We’ve got to work harder in practice,” he said.
The Bulldogs head to Siuslaw next week. The Vikings fell to 1-1 in league play after a loss to Douglas Friday. Iveans wants his team to be ready.
“I’m confident about it,” he said. “We just need to work harder than their team.”
