Schools will stay open if there are enough teachers

Health officials say the H1N1 influenza virus is ravaging Coos County.

The bug is partially to blame for hundreds of absences at area schools. But unlike in the spring, when school officials sent students home when one suspected case of swine flu appeared at North Bend High School, classes have stayed in session despite the bug's arrival.

Officials say school doors will remain open unless illnesses overwhelm a different segment of the districts' population: teachers.

The area's superintendents met Thursday with health officials and discussed the potential for school closures.

"Everyone was confirming that the deciding factor would be staff," said Bruce Shull, Myrtle Point's superintendent of schools.

When teachers start sniffling and sneezing, districts rely on a cast of substitutes.

The South Coast Education Service District compiles a list of subs and ensures they have the proper certification. There are 145 substitute teachers available on the South Coast, said Sharon Smith, executive secretary to the ESD superintendent.

"It may sound like a lot of subs, but it's really not that many," she said.

The problem is these teachers aren’t equally distributed among districts. While Coos Bay and North Bend have dozens to choose from, smaller districts can rely on only a handful.

Port Orford-Langlois School District has about 16 teaching subs who are considered regulars, said Superintendent Mick Lane. But some of them can only fill in for specific subjects or grade levels.

"Even if they were all available, we wouldn’t be able to function if 25 percent of our teachers became ill," he said.

Myrtle Crest Elementary School has come close to having a quarter of its teachers out, though Shull said there have been enough substitute teachers.

Another problem the district had to confront was getting students to school when bus drivers were calling in sick. They were able to find enough substitute drivers, but the problem illustrates how there are many factors in keeping schools open.

"Being in such a rural district, getting our kids here is a problem if we don’t run the buses," Shull said.

School officials also have been scrambling in Powers. They only have about four or five substitute teachers to call on, said Ellen Baldwin, administrative assistant. Some teachers have taken on additional classes during their prep periods.

"It's not real easy, but we’ve managed," Baldwin said.

The area's larger school districts haven’t been hit with too many absent teachers. North Bend Middle School Principal Ralph Brooks said there were a couple of teachers in North Bend out Thursday, and the middle school’s nurse had sent some others home Monday.

Angie Webster, a nurse in the Coos Bay district, said only a handful of staff have been unable to come in to work.

Schools everywhere have put out hand sanitizer, taught children to cover their coughs and encouraged good hygiene.

"When I hear coughs, I see a lot of elbows going up," Brooks said, of students avoiding coughs in their hands. "They are getting it."

Students are returning to classrooms in North Bend days after half the seats were empty in the district's middle school due in part to illness.

More than 250, out of 573 students, stayed home Monday from North Bend Middle School, while 115 Hillcrest Elementary's 575 students took the day off. The absentee rate has stayed steady at the elementary school, while North Bend Middle School had only 206 absent students Tuesday and 166 gone Wednesday.

"We are getting better," said Brooks. "It seems to go through them pretty quickly."

North Bend students aren’t the only ones who haven’t been feeling well.

Between 15 and 20 percent of students in Powers, Myrtle Point, and Driftwood Elementary School in Port Orford have been absent the past week. Tuesday at Reedsport Junior/Senior High School, 88 out of 315 kids were absent.

Some schools haven't been affected as severely. Coos Bay schools have seen a typical number of absences, said Webster. And Bandon High School had only 15 of its 273 students out of class Monday.

Coquille schools have seen about 10 percent absentee rates this week.

Students and school employees who have been coming down with flu-like symptoms can’t have the seasonal flu, because it's too early in the year for that, said Dr. Hugh Tyson, Coos County’s health officer.

"It's almost certainly swine flu and it’s arrived in a very real way," he said.

This isn't a joke!! My kids have it! It has been confirmed by their doctor!! This is far worse then the regular flu! It keeps me up all night watching my kids because they are acting so weird that I don't want to leave them alone for to long in fear that they will quit breathing or something!! This isn't a joke for all of those people that think it is just wait until a young child in your family has it and you'll see!

The real conspiracy here is not the swine flu itself. The swine flu is here and apparently "hitting hard". The problem here is the reaction from the federal government. The swine flu isn't that bad. It is a little worse the regular flu. WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? What is happening is government propaganda. They use something like this to take people's minds of other issues. Remember those couple wars we are in or our economic reccesion? Nope, all we can talk about now is how everyone needs to go green, healthcare and the swine flu. It is merely a distraction.

"If this is a conspiracy"...We know it was released in Mexico city, up wind from the center. We know Obama was there that day. We know that he shook hands with a man that died two days later. My feeling? It was a test and an attempt. But then, I'm looking at things people and the media aren't looking at.

If this is a conspiracy, is it intended to kill the young, the frail, the elderly, the people with aids, the people without decent nutrition or sanitary conditions? What ever is loose on our planet that could do that needs to be hunted down and killed like the virus. If isn't a conspiracy then the lab it originated in needs to be destroyed along with the other strains.

Let's also be clear about the similarities of the 1971 man made, weapons grade swine flu the CIA used and this one that has ties to Donald Rumsfeld. That's what sets this flu apart from natural, seasonal flu. It IS important.

carefree highway wrote on Oct 21, 2009 11:47 AM:

Spanish Flu of 1918 killed the young and healthy because their immune systems over reacted and filled their lungs with fluid. Blue face deaths as they were known. It had nothing to do with trench warfare sanitation. Americans soldiers did give it to the germans because they were fighting in some tunnel systems, sharing the same air.

Richard drank the kool-aid.

my stats are from the center for disease control and Oregon DHS (flu.oregon.gov) and they reveal that H1N1 is no worse than the regular seasonal flu. the hype that it is worse or an any way compared to the 1918 situation is scandalous. there is a rating scale and the 1918 pandemic was a 5. H1N1 remains in the 1-2 range along with the Seasonal Flu.

Arrgy wrote on Oct 20, 2009 9:26 AM:

Let's get this clear. This is a man made virus consisting of NA/Asia swine, avian and human. That's 4 viruses spliced into one. This is not a joke. It can not occur in nature and now we're giving it to pigs.

RICHARD CRANIUM:
"The influenza pandemic of 1918 that killed 50-100 million people was an H1N1 variant and we are seeing new strains coming back from South America. It wouldn't take much to have a more virulent or expressive variant and lose 5% of the infected population before getting a handle on it."

WWI, trench warfare, poor sanitation, and medical ignorance is what propagated the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. So, if you're planning on bathing in manure, taking place in trench warfare, and your doctor's medical understanding is on par with that of 1918, then yes, I suppose you may want an H1N1 vaccine. The rest of us living in the 21st century realistically do not. While you're at it, why not get vaccinated for the bubonic plague, typhoid fever, and dinosaur mumps?

WWJD: "Adults and kids that are already immuno-suppressed are the ones that are dying, not normal, healthy people."

Please cite your sources when you provide highly suspect information as something more than opinion.

Local Lady: "I'm not buying into any of the media hype they're shoving down my throat. Don't most of you realize that vaccinating against something like the flu only breeds a stronger strain?"

I can see your confusion. Poorly administrated antibiotics can breed treatment resistant bacteria. Seasonal Influenza and H1N1 are virus and your point is incorrect.

It's sad to see people forget in one generation how Polio and Measles used to cripple, blind, and kill our kids.

The influenza pandemic of 1918 that killed 50-100 million people was an H1N1 variant and we are seeing new strains coming back from South America. It wouldn't take much to have a more virulent or expressive variant and lose 5% of the infected population before getting a handle on it.

Maybe you don't have kids or parents at risk.

Say what you want but I find this kind of glib naysaying completely insensitive and patently offensive.

cblady wrote on Oct 19, 2009 6:46 PM:

WWJD, I agree with you. The people that already have weak immune systems are the ones that are going to have a harder time with this flu. I also think that the Swine Flu is just like the 'regular' flu, just in a different form. Just like there are thousands of different cold viruses, I'm sure there are thousands of different flu viruses. Everyone needs to stop freaking out! But, I do believe we should get vaccinated-IF they would allow everyone to!

WWJD wrote on Oct 19, 2009 2:07 PM:

Adults and kids that are already immuno-suppressed are the ones that are dying, not normal, healthy people. Another ploy by government and media to cause a panic! People need to be informed, and make sure to use basic hygeine skills.

I'm not buying into any of the media hype they're shoving down my throat. Don't most of you realize that vaccinating against something like the flu only breeds a stronger strain? Which in turn breeds a new vaccine and in turn an even stronger strain? We've trapped ourselves in the vicious circle of disease and the pharmaceutical companies are profiting from it. Don't buy into it! Don't get vaccinated!

dannygs wrote on Oct 18, 2009 7:47 PM:

for stats on this, go to www.flu.oregon.gov

there have been 84 confirmed for the state of Oregon. Zero for Coos County.

H1N1 remains in the 1-2 range, which is the same as the seasonal flu.

Not sure what the intent of this article is... Mindtwisted might be 100% right in his analysis.

So, who markets Tamiflu?
**ROCHE LABORATORIES.

Who owns the patent for the vaccine?
**GILEAD.

How much stock does Rumsfeld own in Gilead?
**According to Fortune magazine, Rumsfeld was Gilead's chairman from 1997 to 2001. It's unknown exactly how many shares he still owns in the company, but the value of his holdings is estimated at between $5 million and $25 million.

And who began to terrorize the public with misinformation about bird flu and swine flu?
**The U.S. government under the Bush administration.

Propaganda for the purpose of market manipulation at its finest.

The real question is who is making money by terrifying the American people so badly with this swine flu scare. It is no more dangerous than the regular flu, yet people re all lining up for the Tami Flu H1N1 vaccine...

Follow the money...

While the drug is produced by Roche, it was developed by Gilead Sciences Inc.which owns the intellectual property rights. Gilead, outsourced the production to Roche.

Donald Rumsfeld was appointed Chairman of Gilead Sciences, Inc. in 1997, a position which he held in the years prior to becoming Secretary of Defense.in the Bush administration. Rumsfeld had been on the Board of Directors from the establishment of Gilead in 1987.

As confirmed in a company press statement in 1997, Donald H. Rumsfeld assumed the position of Chairman, of GILEAD: :

"Gilead is fortunate to have had Don Rumsfeld as a stalwart board member since the company's earliest days, and we are very pleased that he has accepted the Chairmanship," Dr. Riordan said. "He has played an important role in helping to build and steer the company..."

There has been an enormous flood of controversy concerning the Swine Flu and Vaccines. I have been sick for the past 10 days with what I think is a cold, and have talked with friends in Portland, Eugene, Corvallis, Roseburg, and Florence that have been sick and know of many others with the same. The symptoms are similiar to mine. I've had the flu before and this doesn't appear to be that. The people that I've talked with, say it's a 3 week stint. I think if we are really concerned that it might be Swine Flu, then there should be a clearing house that test to confirm it and logs the results. Unfortunately, I can't help but think a lot of the hipe is to support the huge profits that the pharmaceutical companies are making. Remember the Bird Flu a few years ago, nothing really came from it, and the publicity passed.

I know of several cases throughout the summer. Had it myself. I watch as NB med cent. did the wrong tests on my wife. I had to send them the CDC memo not to do the fast test as they were producing a lot of false negatives. Many at the grocery store has it. The haur dresser has it. half the school kids have it! Why the denial?

Sounds more like a case of crap than a case of flu virus.

Headlines like this show journalism at is worst. I know of only 1 case of H1N1 in Coos County and it was last year. There have been fewer deaths with H1N1 than any normal flu. Who benefits? Who cares, but the media goes right along with the propaganda every time. I guess it sells papers and flu shots.

poloele wrote on Oct 16, 2009 6:19 PM:

no, it's not the seasonal flu. People are being tested, and it's all A-type which is swine flu.
and people are not dying in droves, the swine flu is less lethal than the seasonal flu.
I am just wondering why we can't get vaccine. This is the real craziness. The swine flu is raging here, and they're not giving us vaccine. This is what's wrong!!!

williebwalking wrote on Oct 16, 2009 4:18 PM:

I have to agree with you MINDTWISTED. There is no way that they can know that this is all swine flue. It's more than likely just the seasonal flu. But hey, nothing like trying to up the stress level of the community with the newest barnyard flu.

Next year will probably be either the bovine or equine flu.

If it were your child, relative, or maybe yourself fighting for their life would you call B.S.. I had two very close friends that died from this virus. One older adult and one young adult. Do what you can to stop the spread please.
