A funeral service will be held for Benedickt Pavlovich “Ben” Eremenko, 77, of Coos Bay, will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3355 Virginia Ave. in North Bend. A visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16, at Nelson’s Bay Area Mortuary, 405 Elrod Ave., Coos Bay. Interment will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Allegany Cemetery in Allegany.
Ben was born April 23, 1932, at Zelona Kut, Ukraine, the son of Pavel M. and Fiokla P. (Boechenko) Eremenko. He died Oct. 13, 2009, at Coos Bay.
He was raised and educated in the Ukraine. He was serving in the Russian merchant marine when he had the opportunity to jump ship in Formosa, Taiwan, and later seek political asylum in the United States. After a brief stay in New York he moved to Coos Bay, where he went to work at Weyerhaeuser where he was known as “Doc” to many of his colleagues. He retired after 38 years as head plannerman at the mill. He also owned and operated Ben's Sharpening Service for nearly 20 years.
Ben was married to Marilyn Kay Johns on May 7, 1977, in Coos Bay and they were later sealed for time and eternity in the Idaho Falls temple. He was an active member of the Coos Bay Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he especially enjoyed working with the youth of the church. He loved music and could play the accordion and the Balalaika and he liked watching old westerns on the television. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family and friends and caring for his animals. He was much loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Ben is survived by his wife, Marilyn Eremenko of Coos Bay; daughters, Darilyn and Christopher May of Beaverton and Krista Cook of Coburg; three granddaughters, Makenzie, Emma and Heidi May of Beaverton; sister, Leda Devdaria of Ukraine; foster sister, Naomi Siewell of Decatur, Ark.; and a large extended family.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson’s Bay Area Mortuary, 267-4216.
