Gertrude Arthelia Swinney

A family celebration of life and graveside service will be held for Gertrude Arthelia Swinney, 95, of Tempe, Ariz., in Coquille.
Gertrude was born Sept. 26, 1913, in Mesa, Ariz., to Walter Melson Tway and Sarah Hazel Tway. She died Sept.15, 2009 in Tempe.
Gertrude Tway married LeRoy Zern Swinney May 5, 1934, in Coquille. In 1999 she moved to Tempe and lived at Friendship Village until her death.
Gertrude was devoted to her family and community and was an avid gardener, especially known for her beautiful flowers. She was active in the Girl Scouts and PEO and was a member of the First Christian Church in Coquille.
Gertrude started working at the post office in 1953, and was postmaster in Coquille from 1971 to 1977.
Gertrude is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Ruth Swinney of Leonia, N.J.; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Robert Loud of Sun Lakes, Ariz., and Mary Beam of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; grandchildren, Karen Burns of Tulsa, Okla, Marcia Swinney-Shay of Ankeny, Iowa, Robert Loud Jr. of Shawnee Mission, Michelle Laemmli of Lees Summit, Mo., and Christina Powell of Gilbert, Ariz.; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the PEO Foundation, designated to PCE; P.E.O. Foundation, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312.
