North Bend’s girls soccer team held off South Umpqua 3-2 on Monday to head into a week-long break on a positive note.
Nicole Medford gave North Bend an early lead with a goal in the ninth minute and Amelia Liggett added a goal on an assist from Alyssa Birrer late in the first half.
South Umpqua had an own goal in the 48th minute, putting North Bend up 3-0, and the Bulldogs held on as the Lancers got goals by Michelle Wright midway through the second half and Kelsi Carr just before the end of the match.
“I thought our girls played well,” said North Bend coach Dustin Hood. “We’re a little bit sick. It’s going to be nice to have the rest of the week off to prepare for Glide.”
North Bend hosts the Wildcats next Tuesday.
Glide tops Bruins
Glide handed visiting Brookings-Harbor its first league loss in more than two seasons, edging the Bruins 1-0 on Monday.
Caroline Brown scored in the 29th minute, with an assist from Shelby Heidrick, and the Wildcats kept the Bruins off the scoreboard.
“It was a very nice win,” said Glide coach Dana Croll.
The Bruins had an unblemished record two years ago, and finished last season without any losses, but with two ties.
“We tied them last year,” Croll said. “Beating them is even better.”
Glide lost to the Bruins in the first half of league play, and also had a tie against Sutherlin, meaning Brookings-Harbor still is alone in first place.
Glide had a great team effort Monday, Croll said.
“The first half was definitely the best we’ve ever played this year,” she said. “The kids were very excited about this game.”
BOYS SOCCER
Sutherlin wins
Sutherlin shut out visiting Glide 5-0 on Monday to keep pace with the other league leaders.
“We played extremely well in the first half,” Sutherlin coach Rick Murphy said of the Bulldogs, who built a 3-0 halftime lead and then got younger players in during the later stages of the match.
Cody Martineau had two goals for Sutherlin and Jesse Alcantor had a goal and an assist.
Sutherlin improved to 6-1-1 on the season.
