Two years ago, we decided to breed our mare. We had done research to find exactly the right sire. His name is Buckaroo Bueno Chex, owned by Cabin Oaks Quarter Horses. We took Spirit to Crane Creek Ranch in Roseburg. On March 28, we were blessed with a beautiful buckskin colt. He was born the day after his mom’s birthday. There wasn’t a day that went by that we didn’t spend at the barn imprinting, training and loving him.
Coos County Fair was coming up and we were asked if Spirit and her colt could spend the week in the Babies and Ladies in Waiting Center. He was a hit. I can’t tell you how may hearts he touched.
He went on to win grand champion stallion at fair. The girls took first in the parade. Spirit and the baby came home, and shortly after that we took them out to Stacey and Marvin Fanno’s. Needless to say, he learned to eat treats, apples and pears (Thanks Marvin; he loved you.) Stacey was very diligent about bringing him in for daily beautification and kisses.
On Sept. 9, I received a phone call that he broke his leg. Dr. Lisa and her crew splinted his leg and we were off to OSU. My daughter Corttney (Hubbard) and Angelica (Kreuger) rode in the trailer keeping keeping a watchful eye on him. We made it up to OSU in record time. They took X-rays. The outlook was 80 percent recovery, if all went as planned, but the next day we got a phone call that the plate had broken. Back into surgery, with now a 50 percent recovery.
I will never forget the phone call on Sept. 14. His leg had broken above the plates. His battle was over.
I didn’t realize how many hearts he touched, including phone calls from people who had seen him in the birth center, watched him win his grand champion buckle at fair. Thank you to all who sent condolences.
I want to thank Elvin and Nancy Hawkins (Cabin Oaks Quarter Horses) for the best stallion, Eric Pettibone (Crane Creek Ranch) for his love and professionalism, Spirit for blessing us with him, Stacey Fanno for her love with everything and being my rock, Angelica Kreuger for her compassion and help, Myrtle vets for their care for him, OSU for not giving up and their professionalism, and my family.
