Once again, project doesn’t make it on monthly agenda

COOS BAY — The developers who’d like to build a liquefied natural gas terminal in Coos County won’t get to take their application before federal regulators this month.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission meets Thursday, but Jordan Cove Energy Project is not on the agenda.

This is the third meeting that Jordan Cove has been snubbed since the company requested a hearing.

Project Manager Bob Braddock said he thinks the agency’s chairman wants to have a full commission before discussing the controversial issue. The previous chairman resigned following the inauguration of President Obama and a replacement, John Norris of Iowa, is awaiting confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

The full Senate is scheduled to consider Norris’ confirmation Tuesday, according to its Executive Calendar.

“We speculate that they are trying to get the fifth member before they address something that is as controversial as a large LNG project,” he said.

Local port officials are shaking their heads over why the commission hasn’t made a ruling on the project that was first announced in 2004.

“I don’t have any idea why they haven’t posted that to the agenda,” said Martin Callery, director of communications for the Port of Coos Bay. “We are somewhat puzzled by that.”

Jody McCaffree, leader of local opposition to the project, said  FERC may be considering whether staffers need to conduct another environmental review. She insists the current document is riddled with flaws, such as consideration of its impact on the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Western Oregon timber plan, which is no longer on the books.

The port has an option agreement with Jordan Cove and Weyerhaeuser Co. to sell the LNG developers more than 150 acres of property on the North Spit. It’s set to expire Dec. 1, but Braddock said he plans to sit down with port officials this week to work out a contract extension.

“We intend to do that,” he said.

Jordan Cove also has an option with the owners of the Kentuck Golf Course, which has agreed to sell the land so it could be used for wetland mitigation. That agreement wouldn’t expire until the middle of next year and it can be extended, too, Braddock said.

Neither Braddock nor Callery would speculate whether the delay bodes ill for the Jordan Cove project.

McCaffree wasn’t sure what was the cause for the delay, but she wasn’t complaining.

“Delay is always good for us,” she said.

The editor has a bad habit of asking the Mayor for explainations about the Mayor. Try doing some real reporting and check the public county tax records online and see how close his property is to the LNG site.

Your "spin" could have been written by wild bill himself on FOX news. Though slippery slopes prevail under your feet one fact remains - the decision has already been made and all that is needed is a rubber stamp!

dan milburn wrote on Oct 16, 2009 9:05 AM:

WOW!:
Obviously you are NEW here. You have no idea what it is like to have Japanese vessels at the dock and swarms of "non-english speaking tourists" wandering all over town - looking for a GOOD TIME. The standing joke was to sneak up on people's porches and change their light bulbs to RED. Who needed a Seaman's center - when you could all meet at Snappy's, Gussy's or the Eltoro.
Bunkerhill on a Saturday night with all the Docks filled with ships looked like Disneyland with free passes. Not one passport check point, no visas, and who could understand the ID? I can't wait to see the looks on you newbe's faces when the ships come back!

Dear Mr. Milburn, proud neighbor of Chuck Freeman

WOW!! Any person on this or the planet that you are from can read these comments. We look like bumpkins to the outside world already; no more help needed.

Please learn about LNG. It is not the natural gas available from NW natural in Coos County. Learn about transporting LNG by vessel and by pipeline. Mastec did not put in any "plumbing". The county commissioners did not pay fifty million for the pipeline from Roseburg, nor for the laterals within the county. The majority of the expense was paid by the taxpayers. Commissioner Main is opposed to LNG. Pipelines don't know if they are going east or west. FERC does have a chairman and that government body makes decisions frequently. "Tanks" were never planned for Roseburg.

Love the climate, the beaches, the scenery, but the ignorance of some of the comments here make me embarrassed to live in Coos Bay. Hey, it's simple, you are being sold something you don't need by people who want to make a buck, that makes you a sucker.

dan milburn wrote on Oct 15, 2009 4:13 PM:

Oh ye of little faith behold your future is clear. A few important points here. 1) Maztec aready put in the plumbing. Which Commisioners paid for it? I'll bet they are all for LNG huh! 2) the plumbing heads away from Jordan Cove - not towards it. Get it? Big Oil always wins, and you know what runs downhill. Ferc doesn't have a committee chairman! They don't have the ability to DECIDE anything until they have a full committee. See those big tanks in Roseburg yet? What are they gonna be full of? Hot air? Remember the local Union Oil Depot? They will fill their vacancies on the committee, meet and decide yes. Bank on it! Advice? I'll bet Jeff would advise you to buy stock in Natural Gas. Who wants to bet Farr's is the only folks smart enough to bring in truckloads of gas appliances?

Jody, you're just like my wife... She's always reading my mind. Richard Cranium makes a very good point. It's too bad you weren't more like a "Richard Cranium." Yes, it would be great if we had a lot of Richards around to keep us sticking to the facts and avoiding speculation. If we could all shoot from the hip and get things right the first time all this delay wouldn't be costing so much of our time and money.

I have lived on my land for over 50 years and sell big fat high grade logs when the price is right. I am not from Califoria but I do do hug my trees. If I can touch my hands they are too small to cut. What I resent ab out all of this is that the Port of Coos Bay and a handfull of hungry business people, crooked politicials and Unions in Portland can cook up a scheme to do profound damage to ruralist of all stripes from the far side of your bay to Klamath Falls. I do not resent anyone wanting work but these personal attacks on a lady show how weak this proposal is. We strongly support Jody McCaffree.

FIREFLY, you are Way Off Base !!!
Why do "you people" think because someone does not want LNG, they are from out of town or anti everything. I have lived here my whole life, over 60 years, and want business and jobs and a healthy community.
The people YOU commend are the Problem here. WHAT have they done to bring anything here. Nothing ! Now because they want a dangerous LNG you think they are great, real funny ! !
I don't know Jody but I certainly agree with her and like the fact, SHE doesn't give up on something she believes in.
I am from a logging, fishing, longshoring background so I am not against good jobs or industry, just LNG.

1313 wrote on Oct 14, 2009 7:20 AM:

I am NOT a "tree hugger" for sure, or a "profession protester" BUT I am certainly a "No LNG" FOR SURE !!!
I don't know anyone that is for LNG, except a few, very few people that comment here. I guess I know the intelligent people. Not the ones who want us to take the dangerous trashy industy jobs that will end up not paying
enough to make the danger worth it.

WOW1 wrote on Oct 13, 2009 11:16 PM:

Many of us have done our research and gone to the forums and stood on picket lines have chosen to be quiet and avoid the personal attacks, such as those directed at Jody McCaffree. She has faced criticism, usually reserved for elected officials but she wasn't elected. She is driven by the conviction that this project is unnecessary and dangerous to the community. She fights an idea. Many of you fight her. I admire her courage and tenacity and pledge my vote for any office she should seek.

There is a part of me that really hopes that the project succeeds. I want to see what CB/NB looks like on a Saturday night with 900 construction workers looking for a little action. I hope I get to hear your comments then. As for the sixy jobs, how many skilled LNG workers are there in this area?

I trust the lady who has done her homework.

firefly wrote on Oct 13, 2009 10:45 PM:

I can see very clearly the CAVE (Citizens against virtualy everything) people are very pationate about the LNG. They sell their homes in California for millions and move to our town and buy a house for thousands and retire. This leaves them the ability to turn our town into a retirement village with nothing and that is what they want. Well listen here Jody and your fans of tree hugging environmental anti business and developement friends. Well i stand for the majority of Coos County, get out of our town, move back to California, hug a tree, and drive your electric cars. I want to commend Mr. Braddock, The Port of Coos Bay, The Economic Deveolopment Council, and everyone else trying to better our community. Great Job------GO LNG-----GO LOGGERS------boooooo JODY.....

whatintheworld wrote on Oct 13, 2009 9:24 AM:

Its time to s**t or get off the pot FERC! Remember that it's a consensus findings of the Coast Guard, Homeland Security, state, and federal agencies, that a catastrophic event at the LNG transport vessel while in the narrow Coos Bay estuary will result in a fireball at least 1 mile wide. How many of you have children or grandchildren among the thousand students and faculty who attend Sunset and Madison schools that are less than 6/10 mile away from the LNG transports? If there nust be local LNG to make Braddock very wealthy, why can't the LNG vessels be kept offshore as they are in other countries?

Citizen2 wrote on Oct 13, 2009 9:09 AM:

I ddeply resent the snide remark by HILUIX that those of us resisting this stupid and unneccessary proposal are being paid to protest. We are defending our land and i hgave done so at real and significant expense includng giving substantial sums (I only wish I had more to give) to the groups standing up agaist this VERY well funded multinational corporate effort. We have shown up to meetings and hearings, delivered comments and written Congress without a cent of pay. The supports sneak around in back rooms, shout down anyone who asks questions and sell our homes for a few pieces of silver.

CBRezident wrote on Oct 13, 2009 7:00 AM:

Braddock himself states that this project is controversial.so why wouldnt one expect opposition, especially when the potential for dissaster is so great. The spit is just what it is, a sand spit,Oregon scientists have shown us that we all need to be prepared for tsunamis and frankly I would rather believe them than some Dude that wants to make a buck.If all of you who just want jobs then maybe its time to sit on the city councilors to get them to bring in companies that will benefit this community other than Braddock alone.I have a feeling that as soon as he gets the land then none of us natives are going to be able to even acess the spit due to security of his precious LNG.As for the dude who thinks that people are hungry this is the Coast and there is no reason that anyone has to go hungry just go to the ocean and you will find something to eat.oops sorry accidental LNG spill sorry your estuaries are ruined and there isnt anything you can do about it cause you let me build LMOA all the way to the bank and not a local one either.

Common Sense wrote on Oct 12, 2009 11:16 PM:

What part of the following don't you understand Bob Braddock's people:

1) Increases our dependence with hostile countries like Russia, Iran, etc for our future energy needs.

2) UNSAFE situation of LNG ships having known 2 mile hazard burn zone & traveling within a 1/2 mile of populated area here (affecting 17,000 people).

3) California & many areas have rejected LNG for being a air polluter.

4) LNG is 2X more expensive then natural gas used today by Oregon citizens.

5) How 400 Oregon property owners will be FORCED to sell their land to foreign investors.

6) Pollutes the air 24/7/365 days a year.

7) How LNG ship will have negative effect on fishing boats & NEW Airport flights.

8) How no local will qualify for any of the jobs at Jordan Cove.

This LNG SCAM is not worth the little tax money collected from vs HUGE risks involved! Every poll taken & even Oregon's Dept of Energy says NO to this SCAM!

Snub? It sounds like the board is trying to make a decision with a full board. It takes time to get Presidential appointments confirmed and after that happens, I am sure the process will move forward. If Callery is puzzled, I wonder how much he knows about how a large bureaucracy works, which is to say S-L-O-W-L-Y.

Citizen2 wrote on Oct 12, 2009 9:52 PM:

There is an old saying in sales. If you have the facts pound the facts, if you have the price pound the price, if you have neither the facts nor the price pound the table. There seems to be a lot of table pounding going on in Coos Bay. This Jordan Cove EIS is full of holes, flaws, oversights and mistakes. All Jody McCaffree has done is stand up and say so. Thousands of citizens who are opposed to this destructive, unneccessary energy scheme cheer for Jody McCaffree.

1313 wrote on Oct 12, 2009 5:44 PM:

what are the credentials of all you people that think LNG would be so wonderful????
what wonderful jobs do you think you are going to get?
I guess a toxic waste dump would employ some people too, but do you want one here? What about an ammunition dump where they store bombs of all sorts and all kinds of explosives, want that here if it provides jobs? My Dad worked at one when I was a young child, but I would not want to live by one now. I know we need jobs but my gosh, why do we need an LNG terminal that nobody else wants. Are we the "black sheep" that gets the throw away industrys? And I would say "good luck" on very many local good paying jobs at LNG.

I watched a program on televison last night and once again it pointed out that we are animals and evolved to become what we are Today. It's getting to the point that I would rather be treated like an animal than a human being. To Jody McCaffree I would suggest that it's time you start treaing human beings like animals. We like to earn wages and feed our families. Stop endangering our species you anarchist.

somethoughts wrote on Oct 12, 2009 2:58 PM:

Domestically we have more then enough Natural Gas. LNG is simply a way for OPEC to dump natural gas on the world market. We will be undercutting domestic producers and enriching countries who hate us. All for 60 local jobs that most likely will go to non-locals. The only one who will get rich off this thing is the Coos Bay Mayor. He has 400 acres on the north spit, just next to the LNG site. (Editor's note: We spoke with the mayor about this. He says he has property in the dunes, but it's north of the spit and about five miles from the proposed LNG site. He says he doesn't expect to profit from LNG development.)

After reading the comments so far everyone seems to be wondering MCcaffree's intentions, credibility, intelligence, and credentials to act as the self-appointed leader against LNG like she has been. Its becoming more and more evident that she really doesn't know what she's doing or what she's talking about. Too many naysayers following her like sheep. She's just a frustrated homemaker with little else to do.

I'm not sure how anything Jody says is worthy of printing. Today, she's talking about the internal thinking of FERC. You'd think that after all her effort to demonize and alienate FERC it would be clear that she has *NO IDEA* what FERC thinks on the matter.
