Government slept as rich gutted nation

The deregulation and privatization of the economic structure of America has led to our current fiscal dysfunctional imbalance. How is it we continue to allow a wealthy 3 percent minority of corporate profiteers and investors to manipulate the system for their own selfish interests?

With fear inducing threats of raising consumers’ costs and eliminating jobs in order to remain in business, as many continue to receive multi-million dollar salaries and bonuses at our expense. The outsourcing of domestic jobs overseas to unregulated countries has destroyed our own economic structure in the name of yet more profit for wealthy entrepreneurs.

Gasoline prices remain overpriced, as oil companies continually break records for quarterly profits earned. Prices for goods and services continue to rise in a failing economy where unemployment levels challenge average citizens to just make ends meet.

There needs to be some way to correct this imbalance and generate funds to retain the basic needs of society as a whole, to keep schools open and provide basic services for the majority of the people, the other 97 percent of the population.

Where are those funds to come from, if not from those that are reaping the benefits of such an overall dysfunctional system? A recent tax increase for the top 3 percent to demand that those on the receiving end give back to that system only seems like a fair requirement to place upon them. Those few who are consuming the majority of the pie need to be held responsible to pay for it. Be wary of those that cry out for no new taxes and less government as a scheme to recruit support and allow business as usual to continue unchecked and unfair to the majority of the population of America.

We are a rich nation and the primary role of our government needs to be to provide the basic needs of food, shelter, education and health care for the entirety of the population, not just those who can afford it.

BO said, "If you handcuff wealthy people then wouldn't you assume they would be less generous in paying their employees?"
Wages have declined 25%+ while CEO bonuses have sky rocketed. Greed makes them less generous. That's just the facts. Please. Don't make me argue against false hoods. It's such a waste of time. This is the only thing any one needs to read on economics at this time...

Quoting a second rate 60's rock band really does little to advance your argument. The rich pretty much pay for everything now and if you tax them to poverty, they'll have nothing left to give.

Then they'll come after you.

Arrgy wrote on Oct 17, 2009 9:58 AM:

BO How do you justify a health insurer making $148,000 a day? Do you really think wages are going up? So many in this area know so little.

Why does any one need more than 30 million dollars? The people would like a living wage. This article is right on. It cracks me up to see poor to middle class people cheering on the consolidation of wealth to the greedy while they get less & less. I think that comes close to insanity.

Moonpenny,
None of my posts here have said Obama was elected because he is smart. My point is that if someone is going to go throwing the word "dictator" around, he might as well at least know what the word means. Obama was ELECTED by a majority of the people; if he were a dictator he would be able to just write health care legislation and make it happen. Those are my points. He is NOT a dictator. I think everybody else has pretty much debunked your flawed logic on the arguments you made. Take off the foil hat and listen to what is being said; you might be able to argue the actual point I was making.

Why did it borrow money to dish out the stimulus pkgs.?

To Moonpenny.....

Your ignorance of politics is showing. He's a right leaning, warmongering, corporate a**kiss, just like Bush & Clinton before him. You haven't a clue as to what the FAR left wants, so why don't you REFRAIN from pretending you know what's going on?

Also, it's absolutely staggering that a black man got elected in this racist country. NOT the other way around as you suggest.

Now if only a health bill passes w/a public option could Obama possibly be seen tipping every so slightly to a centrist. Again, FAR from being a lefty.

M00NPENNY, did you just actually attribute Obama's Presidential election victory solely to the fact that he is black?

What kind of imaginary world do you live in?

Con Queso: You can’t be serious as to actually think NoBama was elected because of his smarts?? I got an eye opener for you, “whispers” he’s black. He could have been Willy the Wino and he would have won. His politics do not matter; no one on capital hill is even listening to him. He’s the tool of the far left. They wanted the White House and they got it, by using him to get it. Think about his politics … Now do you really think he would have won if he were white? His agenda? Uhh... He doesn’t have one.
He is socialist, there’s no doubt, but a dictator? No. They would never let him get that far. Democrats too are capitalists, they just won’t admit it.

We have the democrats to thank for this too. As for taxes I think everybody should pay a percentage and no favorites. I think there should not be a million different ways for government to take money from its citizens. Hotel tax, franchise fees, cigarette and other sin taxes, road taxes, use fees, bridge tolls, state taxes, property taxes, taxes we pay through utilities, income taxes, sales taxes, registration fees, and the list goes on and is seemingly endless. If you win the lottery you pay taxes. If you win at the casino you pay taxes on it. If you got rid of all these little taxes and fees and collected the same amount in one federal income tax and eliminated all the red tape and government jobs you could do a lot more. If you allowed the people to vote on how the money got spent or gave the spending more visibility perhaps.

Tariffs people tariffs. Free trade agreements are what distroyed our ability to level the playing field with regard to labor cost. We have given the American market place to the countries with the lowest labor cost and left the average American with low end service jobs. It is that simple.

GARY,

The U.S. is no where close to being broke. On the international stage, the U.S. is still the most wealthy nation in the world by a tremendous amount. Debt is not the only relevant factor when calculating a nation's worth. Since your understanding of international economics isn't very developed, I suggest you stick to fox news and tea-bagging parties.

Maybe if people like Oprah Winfrey who is mega rich and loves Obama and helped him get elected, leaves all her money to help pay off our debt, it will help a little! ! ! She has no children to leave her money to, so maybe she can help the country who made her rich, instead of sending her money to other countries.

There is nothing new here. This is what capitalism is and what it does. When you bought that first house with no room for a garden, animals or extended family - you signed your own death warrant. You couldn't survive one year without Uncle Sam bailing you out if he pulls on your chain a little bit. You are a Nation of Sheep. All they need to do now is bring back the dinasores so they can eat all the humans and fertalize their gardens. The rich will live in elaborate caves like Fred and Barney Rubble. Save your tax money, you can't fix stupid!

Letting corporations abuse our financial system is killing our middle class.

But by all means, continue your scare tactics. Focus all your attention on calling President Obama a dictator, and continue helping the richest 1% line their pockets with the money of the middle class.

Con Queso wrote on Oct 12, 2009 9:49 AM:

RC Flyer,
Would that be our democratically elected "dictator"? The one who beat John McCain by a sizeable margin last year? The one who can't get health care reform because they keep holding it up in Congress? Does this still sound like a dictator to you?

1. Some people (your 3%) create and produce what the rest of us want. If you don't want what they produce, don't buy it.
2. Jobs go overseas because American workers cost too much in relation to what they produce. We must become more productive if we want to keep our jobs.
3. Oil is expensive because there are so few refineries. Do you support building an oil refinery in Coos County?
4. Prices will fall when demand goes down or supply goes up or both.
5. If you want to "generate funds", get a job or start your own business. Pay some taxes yourself. If you are smart and productive and your business grows you will be able to hire somebody else, too.
6. It is not the role of government to provide food, shelter, education or health care. That is the role of family when we are children, and of ourselves when we grow up.
7. People who think the government or "the rich" should take care of them need to grow up and take responsibility for themselves.

Con Queso wrote on Oct 10, 2009 6:28 PM:

I think cheaper labor overseas is the reason jobs are getting shipped overseas. It costs a lot more to hire Americans to build products than in many third-world countries. And many of us can't or won't pay higher prices that products made in America likely would command. I'm not saying that's a good thing; I just think it's a bigger problem than taxes.

Just An Observer wrote on Oct 10, 2009 9:27 AM:

Rcflyer, maybe you should look at how much better socialist programs have worked out for Europe to see not all socialism is bad. Democratic socialism has done quite well.

Cuba is under the old dictatorial setup that is a remnant from the Cold War. Other Latin American nations that are not socialist also have done poorly, thanks to capitalist excesses that can be laid to the feet of American corporations. Ever hear of banana republics and United Fruit?

I guess not.

rcflyer wrote on Oct 10, 2009 7:28 AM:
