The Coos Bay Urban Renewal Agency has approved three Virtual Business Incubator grants, including one for one of its own agency members.

Orcoast Music, 787 Newmark Ave., owned by city Councilor John Pundt, received $7,500 to help pay for a new sign, exterior lighting and paint, as well as advertising.

Under the Sun Tans and Hydro Massage, 106 Hall Ave., owned by Gino Harpold, got $7,500 to help pay for new signs, computer software and advertising.

Oregon Inspiration, LCC, 191 S. Broadway, received $7,500 to pay for new signs, advertising and shelving.

The agency unanimously agreed to all three grants, though Pundt abstained in the vote for Orcoast Music’s application. He is the third councilor to receive such a grant. The others were Stephanie Kramer and Mark Daily. No other councilors currently own a business in one of the city’s two urban renewal districts.

ACTION JACKSON, The World Newspaper poll says that 45% of people here thinks city councilors should not be allowed to apply for grants.... Could you be an elected offical? MAYBE!!!

Look, there are probably a lot of opinions about this and what really should have been done and hopefully the council has sen the reprocussions, but really, if you want something done to make a change in our community go out and get active! We spend too much time talking about what needs to be done and not enough time doing it. So think of a way that you can do something to make a difference in our town. Volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club, Pick up trash, Get a group together and paint a run down business that can't afford it, YOU can make a difference! Forget the stuff shirts and show them what they should be doing!

This is twice now that the editor (Chamber board member) has taken a position against the Chamber Director. First when he apposed the Chamber Director and executive boards advise to to turn over the Visitor Centers management to the City of Coos Bay and now by publishing this issue 3 times when the Chamber Director stated at a Council meeting that this was entirely appropriate. Seems like the same kind of problem the city had between the Mayor and City Manager. Who is in charge of the Chamber? The paid director or a single board member. I know in both cases I respect the paid executive.

Iwanttoknow why folks can't tell City Council members from the Urban Renewal Area (URA) Council members? Answer: Same reason the North Bend Airport had to be renamed! Seriously: The URA dollars are separate from the city's budget! If I'm wrong, prove it. Just my opinion. Bye

All of the items listed being paid for by grant money here are tax deductable business expenses. No grants needed there.
How bout next time you decide to give away money - you might hire Mike Vaughn to supervise a local crew of people who need jobs and teach them on the job painting skills. You get jobs, you get a paint job and you just might get public support for once. This project could probably have helped dozens of local business folks - not just three.
You need fresh thinking ideas to spark life in this commnity.

Why would the council be exempt from this Grant Money the City offers? The Council members are citizens and business owners of this community. They donate their time, they are away from their families and are voted in by the tax payers. They are just as much if not more part of this community then you or I. There is so much jealousy and back biting in this community it is sickening.

Yikes the city council voting themselves new signs on tax payer backs there's a reason not to vote for them next time .

What a shame. I have talked to a few small business owners in that hub the city outlined and they have been denied. These are long term businesses, +5 years each. Yet city council members slide right on through. If those same members aren’t pleased with the scrutiny this has now caused, shame on your for even submitting your business for some extra cash.

Just how many days is this story going to run?Boring!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark Smith wrote on Oct 13, 2009 3:22 PM:

I like how all three councilors that have businesses have gotten grants and this one abstains from voting. But rest assured he voted for the other two. This is basically a 7,500 dollar perk to their business. As a taxpayer I am outraged that they could even submit their own businesses. TOTAL AND UTTER BULL CRAPPOLA!

whatintheworld wrote on Oct 13, 2009 9:15 AM:

Why is Pundt even seeking a handout? He owns property along Newmark housing Orcoast Music, Java Jones, etc. Does he still own many rental properties and vacant land in Empire. He owns the vacant former Gussies restaurant building. This councilman should be loaning us money. And, why was the fire department making an unpaid personal service call at the home of one Coos Bay city councilor last Sunday afternoon?

Just An Observer wrote on Oct 12, 2009 10:35 PM:

Just to avoid even a hint of any impropriety, I would not have taken the money if I was a city councilor. That's just me. You in the public who vote these guys in can decide at the ballot box how you feel about this.

Must be nice. The rest of us are paying for the betterment of business that can't care for themselves. Welfare Biz.
Must be embarrasing.

Sounds like a great thing if you're a business owner. Too bad the city isn't interested in helping out any of the little people.
