Not only on a national level, but now on a local level, the need for change has been a recurring theme among politicians running for office. That’s what the newest county commissioner candidate is touting, too.

“The same old ideas aren’t working,” said Coos Bay’s Stephen Pickering, who filed his candidacy last week. “It’s time for a new face. If you don’t think I’m change, you don’t want change.”

The 62-year-old may not be a new face to some, though. Pickering is a regular at Coos Bay City Council meetings. He stops in at county board of commissioner and airport meetings, too.

“I’m as up on what is happening in this county as any councilor or commissioner is,” Pickering said.

It’s not his first time running for an office either. Although he didn’t end up getting elected, Pickering ran for a spot on the airport board earlier this spring and for a Coos Bay City Council seat last August.

Pickering said he decided to run for Nikki Whitty’s seat about a year ago, because he wasn’t satisfied with how the day-to-day issues were being handled. Whitty said she intends to, but has not yet filed for re-election. Don Van Dyke of North Bend announced last week he  is seeking Whitty’s seat, while Sheriff Andrew Jackson is running for Kevin Stufflebean’s.

Pickering, a retired corporate manager, wants to see the jail restored to full occupancy and staffing, and would support a plan to tax federally owned forests to compensate for lost logging revenues.

But he says not every issue is black or white for him. He frequently finds himself in the gray, searching for the most economical answer.

“I’m a person with controversies on both sides,” the self-proclaimed activist said. “I focus my energy on seeing what I can do to find answers for the needs of the constituents. It’s time for politicians to go away and for citizens who want the good of the community to come forth.”

Never say NEVER, but if you do get an answer it will come in parts and probably will not be an entire answer to what you asked. Give him until next year.

orecoast007 wrote on Oct 15, 2009 6:18 PM:

Steve,Why in the **** would you support a plan to tax the Feds for lost logging revenue when you know that the Coos County tax payers will get stuck with the bill.... Yes, I have done my homework... By the way, you never did answer my question to you on 10/13 @10:12AM, but I guess that's the kind of candidate you are avoiding questions.. I bet The World "WON'T" print this comment.........

orecoast007 wrote on Oct 15, 2009 6:05 PM:

FERN,So you are saying that I will "NEVER" get an answer to my quesion that I asked of this candidate on 10/13/09 @ 10:12AM

Mark Smith wrote on Oct 15, 2009 4:34 PM:

To Steve:

Oh wait, some of you would have to come out of hiding and expose who you are. Never mind.

Are you saying we need to talk to you in person and give out our full name before you can answer questions. I may have to call the ACLU as this sounds like some sort of ACORN scam to get voter registration

You seem a bit vitriolic

A few minutes?? hahahaha! It took you weeks to answer 4 questions when your were a candidate for the Airport District Director Position #4. The problem is not wanting to answer questions that are asked of you.

just saying wrote on Oct 15, 2009 12:33 PM:

Steve,

Are you saying that you spend your time participating in arguments with anonymous posters in fantasy forums who you envision feeling insulted and you are steadfastly refusing to allow these said anonymous posters in these fantasy forums to bully their way without any accountability for what they say?

Good job.

Steve Pickering wrote on Oct 14, 2009 6:20 PM:

Or you could just talk to me. Instead of reading snippets of misinformation, why not take a few minutes and hear the whole story? You can rely on cut and pastes from disgruntled anonymous posters in a fantasy forum, who have been insulted by my refusal to allow them to bully their way without any accountability for what they say, or you can hear it first hand from someone who uses their real name and does not hide in the shadows, too afraid to step up and actually do something or participate. Taxing the feds is not my idea. I never once said it was. I only support the idea. It comes from Bob Main who should and does know the tax laws. I am always available to answer questions, just ask. Oh wait, some of you would have to come out of hiding and expose who you are. Never mind.

GILIGAN,Just speak with this candidate, read some of his comments on this forum and you will have a different point of view... He supports taxing the Feds, but they won't pay and Coos County tax payers will be stuck with the bill.....

Gilligan wrote on Oct 14, 2009 7:58 AM:

It seems to me that many people are against this candidate but have little to say other than read this or that. Does anyone have actual reasons why he wouldn't be a good candidate for this?

Mark Smith wrote on Oct 13, 2009 3:28 PM:

Don't worry even though he's been shot down a time or two he will keep going until some area has no one to run against him and he'll be in. Based on his comments here and on the forum he scares me, definitely someone that I wouldn't want to see in politics

c.b. businessman wrote on Oct 13, 2009 2:33 PM:

Based on comments below it doesn't look good Pick. You may want to reconsider.

js wrote on Oct 13, 2009 12:43 PM:

Seriously? This has to be a joke. Steve I wouldn't vote for you if you were the last candidate on earth. You were a joke running for city council, a joke running for airport commissioner, and now a joke running for county commissioner. What's next .... Governor?

orecoast007 wrote on Oct 13, 2009 10:12 AM:

I wonder why Steve did not run for Kevin's seat....... Steve, Do you care to answer that? Also, if you have done all you said you have why not post a resume for the rest of us to see... (LOL) I have an idea, VOLUNTEER your time as a Correction Deputy, since you seem to have all of this free time...

Roger Ramjet wrote on Oct 10, 2009 2:24 PM:

Mr. Pickering is completely without qualifications for this position. It's difficult to determine if Mr. Pickering would make a worse commissioner than Andy Jackson, since both both candidate's campaigns are risible.

orecoast007 wrote on Oct 10, 2009 1:13 PM:

Since Steve has a background in law enforcement why don't he run for county sheriff...... He should be a non-paid commisioner since he draws social security....if he is elected... (LOL)

mark smith wrote on Oct 9, 2009 4:19 PM:

After an exuastive read on the worlds forum I dont think I would want to talk to this candidate. I think he would be a nightmare in office.

fern wrote on Oct 9, 2009 3:41 PM:

Pril,

We are also allowed to say what we think about a candidate as well. Just imagine length of a conversation you may have with this candidate, nobody has that much time. Have you communicated with him?
I did not hear anybody whining either.

pril wrote on Oct 9, 2009 1:36 PM:

here's an idea: rather than read forum posts or quotes from posts picked up by other commenters about the candidate, why not talk to the candidate?

Any citizen in the US can run for any office. We're still allowed to do that.

Some of you will go on and on, ridiculing anyone who proposes any kind of change to the way things are, but then we see you back here whining about the way things are. Make up your minds, already.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I have a new motto for Coos County "WERE SCREWED SO YOU MAY AS WELL MOVE HERE TO RETIRE" Go LNG

Mark Smith wrote on Oct 8, 2009 2:38 PM:

I have a feeling he will run until he gets something so he can feel like he is a player in the local area.

Can one run for dogcatcher?

c.b. businessman wrote on Oct 8, 2009 12:37 PM:

Sorry Pick you don't have our vote, just like you didn't on all the other local elections you've run for. Now we have two loosers running; Pick and Jack. What a combo.

action jackson wrote on Oct 8, 2009 11:53 AM:

Go get em Steve O. Some advice first...Shave the beard off and try to be humble. This area doesn't like change so your platform needs to be how you are the best person to keep loose, I mean Coos County the same or worse.

coosbayite wrote on Oct 8, 2009 11:49 AM:

We could do worse. Oh yeah, we already did.

fern wrote on Oct 8, 2009 11:30 AM:

To learn more about Mr. P go to the World's Forum and type his name in the search bar. Here are a few examples of his words:

I myself was born in Michigan when my dad took my mother to meet my grandmother, but I returned to where I was conceived and lived within a month of my birth.

Let it die ...

I have a lot of patients, but I have a limit, and there is a reason I told Mom it was a good investment sending my middle brother to law school. His rates are cheep.

Mark Smith wrote on Oct 8, 2009 11:29 AM:

Is this the same person as Steve Pickering on the forum for this site? People should read more there to learn about this candidate.

swede wrote on Oct 8, 2009 11:24 AM:

ALL I CAN SAY IS READ SOME OF THE PAST POST/COMMENTS STEVE HAS MADE IN THIS PAPER. IS THIS WHAT WE WANT FOR COOS? I THINK NOT. HE WAS FLAT WRONG ABOUT THE ROAD DEPT LAWSUIT AND MANY MORE. WANT,WANT,WANT. I'M TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT THIS SO CALLED CHANGE THEY KEEP SPOUTING.

justrite wrote on Oct 8, 2009 11:17 AM:

Say no to Pickering. What this county needs is a non-paid board to overlook the county day to day. Do away completly with the BOC. This will save us money. Pickering say's he wants the jail back at full staff! But where's the $$$$$$ going to come from. You can tax the Feds till you eyes pop out but they WON'T PAY. Steve is just another tax and spender Coos doesn't need.
