Powers got a key win in the Skyline League volleyball race by beating visiting Umpqua Valley Christian on Tuesday.

The Cruisers won 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 to avenge a season-opening loss to the Monarchs. Powers improved to 3-3 in league play, while UVC fell to 4-3. Both teams still have to play league-leading Days Creek and second-place Elkton.

“We were down a couple of players and playing come-from behind most of the time,” said Powers coach Beth Rector, whose team trailed by eight points in the third game. “The girls just rallied and never gave up and served well tonight.”

Merri Ray was particularly effective serving, including three aces, Rector said.

Liz Linderman had 11 kills and four blocks and Leeanna Sears added six kills and nine digs.

“It was really a team effort,” Rector said.
