North Bend’s girls soccer team beat visiting Sutherlin 3-2 on Monday night to finish the first half of the Far West League season on a winning note.
“I thought we played a little slow for most of the game,” said North Bend coach Dustin Hood. “We were fortunate to get a couple of goals to come out with the victory.”
Taylor Cribbins scored in the final minute of the first half to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 halftime lead.
“That was a real boost for us,” Hood said.
Nicole Medford added a goal on a beautiful shot from 18 yards out in the opening two minutes of the second half.
Chelsea Spencer scored a minute later for Sutherlin.
Caitlin McCullough scored North Bend’s final goal in the 71st minute on a header off a flip-throw from Sammie Clark.
Spencer gave Sutherlin a late goal for the final score.
“It’s a nice way to end the first half of the season,” Hood said.
North Bend is tied with Umpqua Valley Christian for third place at 3-2-1. Those teams open the second half of the league season against each other at Roseburg on Wednesday.
Bruins edge Red Devils
Brookings-Harbor scored in the third minute and held on for a 1-0 win over visiting Coquille on Monday.
The Bruins improved to 6-0-0, while Coquille fell to 0-6-0.
“We played them even after three minutes,” Coquille coach Mark Usselman said. “We played really well. I thought the girls had one of their better games.”
The game was played mostly in Coquille’s end of the field. The Red Devils had four shots on goal, while the Bruins had 10.
Usselman said Coquille’s defense played well and goalie Megan Meador had another strong game.
Wildcats top South Umpqua
Glide beat visiting South Umpqua 4-1 on Monday.
Shelby Heidrick scored in the 17th minute and 42nd minute for the Wildcats. Robin Hansen added a goal in the 56th minute, with an assist by Caroline Brown. Brown scored a minute later.
The Lancers got their goal in the 58th minute, by Becca Rushford.
“We played really, really well,” said Glide coach Dana Croll. “It was our best game of the season. The kids just played together as a team really well.”

Sutherlin tops North Bend
Sutherlin topped visiting North Bend 2-1 to finish the first half of the league season in a tie for second place.
Michael Jimenez gave North Bend an early lead with a goal in the eighth minute on a rebound after a shot by teammate Sam Lynass. Sutherlin tied it on a goal by Cody Martineau in the 26th minute.
Sutherlin took the lead when Tim Mohoney scored with an assist from Dylan Garroute in the 62nd minute, and goalkeeper Kyle Knox sealed the win with a big save in the final 10 minutes, Sutherlin coach Rick Murphy said.
“It was a fabulous job by him,” Murphy said.
Sutherlin and Brookings-Harbor are tied for second place at 4-1-1 at the midway point of the league season. North Bend is a game back at 3-2-1. Coquille leads with a record of 5-0-1.
Pacific gets win
Pacific topped host South Umpqua 4-1 as Thomas Oberbeck had a hat trick.
Oberbeck scored in the 15th minute and added two more goals a minute apart in the second half. Shane O’Brien also scored for Pacific.
Nathan Ronco and JJ Jansen scored for the Lancers.
Midwestern League
Willamette edges Marshfield
Alex Hernandez had a first-half hat trick for Willamette to lead the Wolverines to a 3-0 win over visiting Marshfield on Monday.
Hernandez scored in the 10th, 24th and 35th minutes for Willamette, which got its first league win, while the Pirates remained winless.
