Media isn't the target audience

I don’t think I’ve ever been picketed before. So I’m kind of looking forward to Oct. 16.

On that day, local organizers of the “Tea Party” movement plan to rally outside The World office, as part of the national “Can You Hear Us Now?” campaign. I may bring my own picket sign. It’ll say, “Yep!”

The Tea Partiers are ordinary citizens, mostly conservatives. They’ve organized hundreds of protests nationwide against the health care bill, the federal debt and the Obama administration. They say they’re tired of being ignored by news media.

They plan to visit The World at 9 a.m. on Oct. 16. I’ll be out front to greet them.

I’m not sure, however, why they think marching is necessary. The World is about as accessible as a newspaper can be. Consider:

n We routinely solicit letters to the editor, and we print any letter that meets our lenient standards.

n We invite readers to post comments at www.theworldlink.com.

n We’re happy to print notices about upcoming events, including protest marches.

n We cover all the local news we can get. We printed stories and photos about Tea Party events in April and July.

n Any reader can e-mail or call me. If you don’t catch me at my desk, leave a message. I’ll call back.

Last week, I spoke with Adella Robison of Sixes, one of the Coos County march organizers. She told me she’s deeply concerned about America’s future, and she feels marginalized and ridiculed by the news media.

“We want people to know that the grassroots people are concerned,” she said.

Mrs. Robison, I hear you loud and clear. Let me make a couple of observations.

First, the mainstream media aren’t nearly as hostile as some people say. Right-wing broadcast personalities spend a lot of air time badmouthing us, but smart conservatives apply healthy skepticism. Like all broadcasters, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck get paid for boosting their own ratings.

Second, marching with signs is a dead end. Coos County’s first Tea Party event was news. The sixth or seventh, not so much.

Political debate shouldn’t be about how many people you can assemble in the street. It should be about ideas. So, if you want a platform for your viewpoint, try using your keyboard instead of your poster paint. Send me a letter. I’ll share it with our readers.

The real challenge for conservative Americans is not to win the news media’s attention, but to persuade other Americans to elect conservative leaders. Marching was a good start, but it’s time to move on.

Just about like the fifth or sixth time I read the "cheers and jeers" column, taking up a third or half the page, ho hum !!! Not interesting or worth the space.
Let US give YOU our viewpoint in the "Letters" not you giving us your viewpoint.

To Amadeus, The tea parties are about spending. We don't want them to spend money they don't have. I didn't want Bush to spend money we didn't have. It doesn't matter who is in office. Mindtwisted, I attended the September 12th rally in DC. It didn't look small and insignificant to me.

they gott be fricking kidding...the federal debt? let's think ...who WAS in office for the last 8 years? yes, let's blame OBAMA!!! duh....

The teabaggers are nothing more than a small insignificant percentage of the lunatic fringe, they shouldn't be getting any attention at all. Focus on the other 98% of our country's population, would ya?

The fact that the paper felt it was necessary to post a proactive, defense response made the effort a success before the event even happened.

The objective is to focus for the first time on the media (not the gov't) and let them know that we don't feel like we are being treated fairly.

Obviously they got The World's attention with just the mere suggestion of showing up.

Bravo Adella - point made and received!

Steve,
I have to agree with you. Except a little bit of wine was what I needed, in particular. Queso is nothing without vino. Anyway,I stand corrected. Very insightful letter, by the way. I don't agree with it 100 percent, but I see where you're coming from. Good luck with the commissioners race. Personally I think you're running against the wrong person, but I'm glad you have the community's best interest at heart. I believe that.

With Cheese you need Vino, or is it a little less Vino. Anyway never mind, my Letter-To-The-Editor is published (at least online) as "City wastes money at wrong time", and to suggest I would stoop to shameless plugging of my upcoming campaign. Why I never, well maybe once, ...

Steve,
First come, first served. Wait your turn. But if it's self-promotion for your campaign you'll have to buy an ad. No, I don't work for this or any other newspaper; I just know the way things work.

Interesting. Now where is my letter to the editor from last week?
