Orcas crew returns to area

A Coos Bay U.S. Coast Guard crew returned home this week, after sailing 3,000 miles to Baltimore aboard the Cutter Orcas. But they came home without their ship.
The 18-person squad set off on the Aug. 1 deployment, taking them through the Panama Canal. Seven weeks later, it arrived at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, a major repair and ship building facility. The Orcas is scheduled to undergo upgrades over the next nine months to extend its life. The modernization will include installing new engines and generators.
Meanwhile, the crew will be assigned various jobs, before heading back to pick up the remodeled vessel. Some members may help out crews at the Charleston Station or do patrol on other cutters in Astoria and Seattle.
The Orcas, a 110-foot cutter, has been stationed in Coos Bay since 1989. Named after Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juan Islands in Puget Sound, Wash., it is the sixth Coast Guard cutter to be stationed in Coos Bay since 1935.
