Madisen Spence’s second half goal rallied North Bend to score twice more in a shutout victory over Coquille.

North Bend hosted the Red Devils on Wednesday night, topping them 3-0 after an intense offensive push in the second half.

North Bend forward Nicole Medford nearly scored in the 19th minute of the first half, but the goal was called off because the Bulldogs were offsides. Neither team could hold possession for long for the rest of the half, with the score stuck at 0-0 by halftime.

“We definitely got it together in the second half,” Medford said.

North Bend’s offense woke up, and hammered Coquille goalkeeper Megan Meador with shot after shot. Meador finished the game with 21 saves.

“Our goalie is great, and she made some great saves,” Coquille coach Mark Usselman said. “But it’s not just about the goalie, it’s the whole team.”

After Medford’s goal, the Bulldogs spread it around, continually pressuring Coquille’s defense. Coquille defender Mercedes Lucas left the game with an injury, and Usselman said that weakened the defense.

“We had two injuries and it kind of hurt us tonight,” Usselman said.

Coquille mustered some late offense, but only before North Bend’s Taylor Cribbins scored after weaving in and out of defenders in the 72nd minute to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.

Two minutes later, Medford added the final goal.

North Bend finished the game with 24 shots on goal, and Coquille ended with just four. Usselman said the Red Devils need to capitalize on chances.

“We played well for the better part of a half,” Usselman said. “We had opportunities.”

North Bend halfback Caitlin McCullough said she was happy with how the offense looked.

“I think we passed well, and our keeper did a really good job,” McCullough said. “I think this has been our best game all season.”

Bulldogs coach Dustin Hood was glad to see his team take control.

“It was just nice to see us slow down and play with some composure,” Hood said. “Let’s see if we can build off this and make a push toward the playoffs.”

The players look to add to this victory, and Cribbins thought it was a solid team win.

“It’s a big confidence booster,” she said. “It’s our season’s turnaround.”

The Bulldogs host Sutherlin on Monday night at 7 p.m. Coquille travels to Brookings-Harbor on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
