Marshfield’s volleyball team beat visiting North Eugene, 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 on Thursday, bouncing back from a Midwestern League-opening loss to Thurston on Tuesday.
“It was a good game,” said Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel. “The girls were pretty loose and acted like they enjoyed being out on the court tonight instead of acting scared. It was good to see that enthusiasm again.”
Nikki Gross had 21 assists and three aces for the Pirates. Kasey Kuhn had four aces and three blocks, Kara Young had eight kills and eight digs, and Alisha Charitar had seven kills.
The Pirates get the weekend off, at least in terms of playing, though the players will be officials at the Sunset Invitational middle school tournament on Saturday. Next week, Marshfield has road matches Monday at Churchill and Wednesday at Willamette.

Coquille had the lead in every game, but, with the exception of the third game, the Tigers battled back.
“In a testament to my team’s improved mental ability, they did not falter,” said Coquille coach Danielle McKinley. “They gave up a few points, but they came back strong, which is what we are working hard to do.”
It was just the second time in the six league matches that the Red Devils haven’t gone to five games.
Coquille and Bandon both are 3-3 with one round to go in the first half of league play. The Tigers host Glide and Coquille visits Rogue River on Monday.

Wolves top Cruisers
Days Creek beat host Powers on Thursday, 16-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18, the Cruisers second tough loss this week to an unbeaten league foe.
“Overall, we played them very well, considering that they are another top team in the league,” said Powers coach Beth Rector, whose team lost to Elkton on Tuesday. We’re right there with them.”
The difference Thursday was Olivia Goleman, the Wolves’ outside hitter, who finished with 18 kills.
“She was a force,” Rector said. “We were all over the floor. We just weren’t getting the passes we needed to set up our hitters.”
Ashlee Blanton had eight kills and 25 digs. Taylor Stallard added seven kills and Liz Linderman had five kills and five blocks. Leeanna Sears had 32 digs.
After winning the first game, the Cruisers started strong in the second game, Rector said.

Elkton beat Pacific
Elkton beat visiting Pacific, 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 on Thursday.

Elkton remained perfect in league play, improving to 6-0.
