North Bend’s football team started practice 45 days ago. Friday night, the Bulldogs finally get to play a home game.

After opening the season with four straight road contests, the Bulldogs host Sweet Home in the annual Miss Flame game Friday at Vic Adams Field.

The players are eager to play on their own turf.

“All the guys are real excited,” said senior Nick Garcia. “We’re getting pretty pumped up for it. It will be a lot of fun.”

The team got a boost heading into this week with its first win of the season last week at Phoenix. Even in that game, the Bulldogs had to battle back from an early two-touchdown deficit and make a stop with Phoenix inside North Bend’s 10-yard line and a chance to go up three scores.

“We didn’t lose heart,” Garcia said. “We just had faith in everybody. We were all talking about how much we wanted this game and how much it means to get a win before we’re playing at home.”

The Bulldogs rallied for a 33-18 win that gave a tremendous boost to the team’s confidence level, Garcia said.

When the final horn sounded, the team had a sense of elation and relief.

“The whole team was excited as all getout,” Garcia said. “It was just awesome.”

Now the Bulldogs want to show off their improvements on offense and defense against Sweet Home, which is ranked sixth this week.

“We’ve got a good gameplan for Friday,” Garcia said. “We’re just really thrilled about this game. We have good feelings.”

The evening’s halftime festivities include the crowning of Miss Flame in the 51st year of the partnership between the high school and North Bend Fire Department to promote fire safety.

This year’s Miss Flame court includes Danielle Baker, Dana Crosby, Andrea Tison and Lisa Wiggins. They will be escorted by firefighters Scott Cooper, Tony Massotto, Sean Arrington and Jordan Waddington.

This is the last week of nonleague play for the Far West League. Siuslaw, which is 0-3 with three narrow losses, visits Yamhill-Carlton and Brookings-Harbor hosts Illinois Valley a week after losing at Fortuna, Calif.

Other South Coast games

Marshfield is on the road for the third straight week, traveling to Portland to face Jefferson in a rematch of last year’s playoff battle between the teams, which Jefferson won.

The Sunset Conference enters the second week of league play, with Gold Beach at Glide in a battle of two of the teams that won their openers. The other two Week 1 winners — Myrtle Point and Cascade Christian — are at Bandon and Coquille, respectively. Reedsport plays its first road game of the season at Rogue River in a battle of two teams looking for their first league wins.

In the Skyline League, Powers makes the long trip to North Lake as the Cruisers try to bounce back from last week’s loss to Butte Falls.
