A tsunami advisory was in effect along the West Coast until 1 a.m. today, but that didn’t necessarily keep people away from the beaches.

The tsunami, created by an 8.0- to 8.3-magnitude earthquake in the South Pacific, was expected to hit Coos and Curry counties around 9:20 last night.

Just before the hour, a crowd gathered on Bastendorff Beach near Charleston in hope of glimpsing a swelling wave, while officials tried to disperse onlookers with warnings over a loud speaker.

Sea levels rose less than five inches in Charleston, the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center reported. The highest waters hit in Port Orford, reaching half a foot.

The center issued the tsunami advisory around 3 p.m. Tuesday to serve as caution to stay out and away from the water, due to dangers arising from strong currents and surging waves.

A World employee who watched from a cliff near Face Rock in Bandon on Tuesday night, said the waters were rough, but it was hard to tell the tsunami from any other waves.

“Around 9:15 p.m., the water receded just behind Cathedral Rock, followed by a large wave that brought the tide almost to the high-tide mark,” Ginger Shepherd said.

That was about it.

Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard Station in North Bend and at the State Parks regional office at Sunset Bay said there were no incidents or rescues.

This reminds me of idiots running to a bomb site,(non-emergency personnel), and then another bomber comes along and blows them up crowded up together. There was no tsunami worth seeing and if it was, it could have acted like a sneaker wave and eliminated the Looky Lulu fools.

Yeah yeah natural selection, HA HA!

Whats funnier than the folks that went to the beach, is that all of you came up with the same stupid joke.

WHACKA WHACKA!!!!

The folks that went down to see a Tsunami first hand makes me think....Maybe Darwin was wrong!

Remember: It's not the size of the wave, it's what you do with it!

ProudMommy wrote on Oct 1, 2009 5:06 PM:

I NEVR said anything about going and watching anything........... Im one of the ones that wants to move and get away from the coast because of things like this. I just said nobody over reacted. SO was it that you "forgot" what u read? :)

It may not have been anything to worry about but that doesn't mean you go to the beach to watch - you're just asking for trouble. It's not the size of wave that matters anyways - it the speed and strength - it didn't have to be very big to come in fast and suck people out. Risk your own life if you want but it makes me sick that some people took their children out there. "Oh nothing happen" Maybe not this time but what about next time?

Pure_brandi wrote on Oct 1, 2009 8:27 AM:

haha, took the words right out of my mouth :-D Must be the same gene that gets people killed on our dunes every year too.

Pure_brandi wrote on Oct 1, 2009 8:26 AM:

Basic laws of Natural Selection...In the case of an actual Tsunami, if the people wanted to see a big wave, well by golly let them see it :-) The REAL sickness of it is the people that bundled their kids up and took them out there too...~*shakes head*

Forgot wrote on Oct 1, 2009 7:39 AM:

@ProudMommy...

So you would take your kids to the beach in the hopes of seeing a tsunami, which is really unpredictable, because the "media" said not to worry about it?

Remind me to never let my children anywhere near you. This story, and people like you, make me believe in Natural Selection.

I think I agree with WorkerBee. The Population needs to be thinned a bit in the first place.

ProudMommy wrote on Sep 30, 2009 7:21 PM:

Who over reacted? I recall all media saying dont worry about it.

oliver woods wrote on Sep 30, 2009 6:45 PM:

Interesting how some folks cite officials for over reacting, yet would be the first to condemn them if the "big one" actually hit and people died. You know, the ignoramuses that went down on the beach to see a tsunami. Stupid is as stupid does.

Duck wrote on Sep 30, 2009 5:43 PM:

Yeah because a 5 inch wave is really hazardous. They over reacted in the first place.

Worker Bee wrote on Sep 30, 2009 5:39 PM:

Hey, it's culling of the herd. In the case of a real tsunami, the stupid ones like these people would have made more space for the rest of us. Sounds like the reporter was the only smart one.
