Service will honor fallen firefighters

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 |
The 28th annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service on Sunday, Oct. 4, will honor nine Oregon firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2008.
The service includes honors for Edrik Gomez, 19, of Coquille, who died with six other firefighters employed by Grayback Forestry Inc. and a pilot with Carson Helicopters during a crash at the Iron Complex Fire on Aug. 5, 2008, in Northern California. Gomez was a student at Southern Oregon University. The service also will recognize a Scappoose firefighter who died in a car crash after responding to wildfires that same month, a press release said.
They will be among the 98 men and 5 women from 36 states remembered at the official national service held at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md. Nineteen firefighters who died in previous years also will be honored.
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security will sponsor the official national tribute. This ceremony marks the beginning of National Fire Prevention Week.
Many fire departments across the country will conduct simultaneous services, lower flags to half-staff, sound sirens at noon, and observe a moment of silent tribute.
