Rainfall dampens fire restrictions

Coos Forest Protective Association has reduced fire rule levels thanks to recent rainfall throughout Coos, Curry and western Douglas counties.

Industrial rules

The industrial fire precaution level has fallen to a Level 1. This change in fire restrictions is for all road and logging operations in zones CS-2, CS-4, CS-5, SK-1 and SK-2. Industrial operators should check their operating permits to determine the zones.

IFPL I prohibits smoking while working on or traveling through an industrial operation. Specified fire tools and suppression equipment must be maintained at all operations.

A fire watch is also required at all industrial operation sites unless waived or modified in writing by a fire warden.

As fire season progresses, additional closures and restrictions may be imposed if weather conditions become more severe.

General public

A regulated use closure remains in effect for the general public, meaning burn permits are required.

Also, when people are out in private forestland smoking is prohibited, except in vehicles or buildings.

• Open fires are prohibited, including campfires and other fires, except at designated locations.

• Chain saw use is prohibited, between the hours of 1 and 8 p.m., in areas subject to Level 1 closures.

• Chain saw use is permitted at all other hours, if the user has one axe, one shovel, and one 8 ounce or larger fire extinguisher. In addition, a fire watch is required at least one (1) hour following the use of each saw.

• Use of motor vehicles is prohibited, except on improved roads or crop harvest.

For more details on the regulated use closure or other burning restrictions and closures, call the CFPA Closure Information Line at (541) 267-1789 or visit the Web site at http://www.coosfpa.net.
