The Coos County District Attorney will consider whether to charge a Coos Bay man who struck a French couple Sept. 17 in a North Bend crosswalk.

Seventy-one-year-old Michel Bernard subsequently died in a Portland hospital. Bernard succumbed to complications from blunt force head injuries, according to the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Bernard was crossing at Sherman and Virginia avenues with Marie-Therese Pradel, both of France, when a Toyota 4Runner struck them, North Bend Police Sgt. Curt Bennett said.

Medics airlifted Bernard to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland, where he died three days later at 4:35 p.m.

Pradel suffered only minor injuries.

Police have not cited driver Jared Bechtel, 24, of Coos Bay.

The Coos County Crash Team is conducting an investigation, which the DA will review when considering whether criminal charges should be filed. Bechtel was turning right off Virginia Avenue onto Sherman Avenue, when his vehicle struck the couple. The intersection was partially blocked for about three hours during an investigation.

North Bend police have made efforts to prevent these type of accidents through pedestrian crosswalk stings across the city. Earlier this summer officers cited six drivers who failed to stop for pedestrians in the second sting of the year at the corner of Virginia Avenue and Marion Street.

Oregon law requires drivers to stop for pedestrians at any intersection, whether marked or not. Violating Oregon’s pedestrian law is a Class B traffic violation, which comes with a $242 fine.

I'm sick of people that think just because they are in a car you better watch out for them. I hope they throw the book at him. I wish they would have at all of them. I'm for more stings. At least we know our tax dollars are really at work. North Bend needs the money

To Just Me:

Thank you for saying it! Sure, Paula may not be the judge that wins all the popular votes in Coos County... but... I don't see that any of them are.

Outside of the law, she is involved in several philanthropic endeavors that I am aware of... and that, to me, brings more kudos than anything.

As far as this kid goes, I actually hope that he goes in front of her. She truly is no nonsense if you've seen her in action. This kid is not a relative, shame on those of you who think he's getting preferential treatment because of such a false accusation as nepotism.

Trust me, he'll do jail time. But it sounds to me like this one will ultimately be reserved for him to be held at the Coos County Hilton for the important proceedings.

Just Me wrote on Sep 28, 2009 10:19 AM:

To all of you THINKING he is related to one of the judges, he is not! The judge in question here is Paula BECHTOLD not Bechtel as this mans name is. Sorry, there goes your theory down the old toilet!

What makes you think the driver that hit those people at PonyVilliage wasnt prosecuted. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced and is sitting in prison and awaiting deportation.Get your facts straight before you post.

QWCS,

Why bother? These people can't be bothered with facts.

1313, He must be related to one of our elected officals in Coos County.... A senior citizen is never cited when they run someone over..... Remember the teen hit by a senior driver in a crosswalk in Bandon....

Mary Juana wrote on Sep 25, 2009 5:22 PM:

It's possible, if there was traffic in another lane, that he truly did not see the couple. I almost hit a gentlman in a wheelchair because he wasn't tall enough to see around the mini van that was next to me. There are such things as accidents. And prosecuting everyone for every accident will not prevent more accidents. And just because he wasn't cited does not mean he was "related" to someone or "knows" someone. Now as for the guy that killed the pedestrians and left the scene, yes he should have been prosecuted. But accidents happen people and there isn't alot one can do. If the driver was intoxicated or texting on a phone, or otherwise distracted, then yes, he should be cited. But stop the lynching. Use some common sense and lose the "hang 'em theory". Heaven forbid you should ever be in his shoes....accidently.

Just Me wrote on Sep 25, 2009 5:20 PM:

If I remember correctly, the guy that killed the couple at Pony Village was charged and sentenced to jail! It took them awhile to find the creep but they did and he was locked up! Someone may correct me if I am wrong! Also, in this incident, I cannot believe this guy did not even get a ticket for this! What a travesty and a slap in the face to this mans wife!

buttercup wrote on Sep 25, 2009 5:02 PM:

Thank you QWCS. The man who killed the pedestrians in the pony village man received 6 years jail time. I would consider that prosecuted and a significant amount of trouble. Please people, think and research before talking.

"sentenced Garcia Moncada to the severest punishment possible for striking and fleeing the site of an accident without providing aid to the victims — two consecutive 36-month sentences in the state penitentiary; a total of six years in prison.

More selective prosecution by a suspect legal system takes place. Where is the justice?

tanzyragweed wrote on Sep 25, 2009 2:30 PM:

It is also interesting to me that the cases of the pedestrians killed at pony village and again the one @ mingus park crosswalk were not prosecuted, but this one will....

I see the Peanut Gallery is already posting nonsense.

The guy from the Pony Village got sent home....back to Mexico.

Jared is related to a to a local judge, go figure.

Mr E wrote on Sep 25, 2009 1:46 PM:

Not every accident, even where the law was apparently broken, results in a citation.
However, I can't help but wonder why (in this case) there's not been at least a citation issued. I wonder if there are not some possible reckless driving charges coming... unlikely, but depending on how the results of this investigation went, it's possible.

COQUILLIAN wrote on Sep 25, 2009 1:30 PM:

The male subject who hit the two at Pony Village received the same treatment. An investigation was done, and it was submitted to the DA. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison. Wish you people would get your facts straight. Pay attention, please.

loventhecoast wrote on Sep 25, 2009 12:59 PM:

Please tell me why the guy who KILLED and left the seen at the Pony Village parking lot did not get into trouble - but yet, this case is being pursued... seems strange to me. I feel the guy who KILLED the couple and left should have been sentenced for sure.

1313 wrote on Sep 25, 2009 12:52 PM:

Who is Jared related to ?

1313 wrote on Sep 25, 2009 12:51 PM:

Are you saying this driver wasn't even cited for not giving the right of way to a pedestrian, after all the stings where people were cited ????
Why not ????
