Charleston boat basin gets $1 million for improvements

The Oregon Transportation Commission has awarded more than $1 million in grant funding to help improve Boat Basin Drive in Charleston.
Although the funds have been approved, the work won’t begin until 2011 at the earliest, a press release said.
The project, which is a partnership between Coos County and the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay, would pave sidewalks, establish bike lanes and improve stormwater drainage from the Davey Jones Locker store area to the new Oregon Institute Marine Biology interpretive center.
The state provided $1.1 million, which the county commissioners accepted Wednesday. Port commissioners are expected to do the same at their Oct. 1 meeting, and then agree to an intergovernmental agreement with the county in November, said Mike Gaul, deputy executive director of the port.
The port will provide $43,000 of its own money for the work, Gaul said.
Boat Basin Drive was one of 13 projects for which the state provided funding. The state sorted through a total of 91 applicants before selecting the finalists.
The projects will become part of Oregon’s Statewide Transportation Improvement Program and will be scheduled for work in 2011-12, a press release said.
