Volleyball: Bobcats tip RR in marathon

Myrtle Point edged visiting Rogue River 25-15, 12-25, 25-18, 15-25, 15-12 to improve to 3-0 in Sunset Conference play.

“I’m very, very excited,” said Myrtle Point coach Kami Hixson, whose team joins Cascade Christian as the only unbeaten squads in the league. “I feel the girls have great chemistry. When things are going rough and tough, they’re each other’s motivators. They work hard. We’re young and inexperienced and they’re slowly putting it together.”

Brittney Hubbard had 10 service points and nine digs for the Bobcats. Peyton Babb had 13 kills, eight service points and 12 digs. Amanda Sturgill and Kaitlyn McCollum combined for 10 kills and six blocks. Jazmine Granthum added 29 assists and seven digs.

Jessica Freitas had a strong game for the Chieftains, while Jesse Sondag was solid at the net, Hixson said.

Panthers tip Devils

Gold Beach beat Coquille in five games Tuesday, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19, 22-25, 15-12.

Katherine Zuber had seven kills and two aces for the Panthers. McKenzie Litterell added five kills, four aces and three digs and Lindsey McDonald had eight digs. Sydney Hadley and Katie Moore each had three aces and Moore added 10 assists.

Nikki Hall had 11 kills and 14 digs for the Red Devils, while Christie Andy added 13 assists, 13 digs and four aces. Chelsy Forbes had 15 assists and 11 digs and Allison Cook added seven kills.

The Red Devils have been battling illness since Friday, with half the team either out or playing at less than 100 percent, coach Danielle McKinley said.

Gold Beach improved to 2-1 — all in five-set matches — while Coquille fell to 0-3.

Braves get first win

Reedsport beat visiting Glide, 25-17, 25-18, 16-25, 25-22, the Braves first Sunset Conference win.

Monica Vaughn had seven kills and five aces for the Braves, while Eden Huebner had five kills, two aces and a dig. Brianna Smith had two kills and seven blocks and Susi Martinez had 10 digs.

Marissa Duarti had 12 kills for the Wildcats. Jessica Strader added 11 kills.

Challengers top Tigers

Cascade Christian topped visiting Bandon, 25-11, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18 on Tuesday to improve to 3-0 in Sunset Conference play.

McKenzie Kelton had three aces for the Challengers, while Becca Sellers had 16 kills and Brianna Holtz had 22 assists.

Grace Garrett had 23 kills and six digs for the Tigers. Karli Crook had five kills and 19 digs, while Kacy Crook had three kills and nine digs, Marissa Ramos had 18 digs and Chelsea Hinojosa recorded 26 assists.

Nonleague

Pirates fall

Roseburg beat host Marshfield, 25-15, 25-3, 25-15 in a nonleague match on Tuesday, playing the night after beating North Bend in the Civil War.

“It was pretty ugly,” said Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel. “Coming off the big, emotional win last night, I knew they might be a little flat. They just weren’t ready to compete.

“We’ll learn from it.”

Amber Owen had five kills and Kara Young had 12 digs for the Pirates.

The Pirates compete in the Rogue Valley Invitational on Saturday and start league play at home against Thurston on Tuesday.

Far West League

Bruins start with win

Brookings-Harbor beat visiting Sutherlin, 18-25, 25-23, 30-28, 25-16 to open Far West League play on Tuesday.

The Bruins stayed unbeaten on the season, and have been improving on offense all year.

“We’re passing the ball and setting up our offense,” said Brookings-Harbor coach Lori Cooper.

Nicole Watterson had 13 kills, four blocks and 20 digs for the Bruins. Sarah Pate had 12 kills and three blocks and Felicia Gutierrez had 39 digs and two aces.

Tessa Knight had five kills and 23 digs for the Bulldogs. Kasse Freeman added four kills, five stuff blocks and 16 digs. Mikayla Mendenhall had six kills and 27 digs.

Lancers tip Trojans

South Umpqua edged host Douglas 22-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-18, 15-13 in the league opener for the two schools Tuesday.

Shelby Bay had 12 kills and four aces for the Lancers. Jenny Stevenson and Chelsea Langston each had nine kills, while Stevenson had 25 digs and Langston eight blocks.

Jessica Case had 13 kills and 26 digs for the Trojans and Taylor Bond added 15 kills and two blocks.

Skyline League

Pirates get first win

Pacific beat host Camas Valley, 27-25, 18-25, 26-24, 25-16 Tuesday, the Pirates first win of the league season.

“We struggled in the beginning,” said Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag. “Once we started building momentum in the third game, something clicked. They came together as a team and started to put plays together. They got some confidence. It felt really good.”

Devon Ashdown had 16 assists for the Pirates. Jesse Culley had 10 kills and Jordan White had 29 digs. Jessie Paulson had five blocks at the net.
