The Coos County District Attorney’s Office has charged the former director of the Oregon Coast Lab Band and his wife with stealing more than $33,000 from the nonprofit organization.

Greg and Patricia Young were arraigned Monday in Coos County Circuit Court, each on charges including three counts of aggravated first-degree theft and four counts of first-degree theft.

Each aggravated count constitutes theft of at least $10,000, while the charges of first-degree theft account for more than $750 in stolen property, said deputy district attorney Oubonh White.

The thefts occurred over seven six-month periods, dating back to January 2005, White said.

Greg Young resigned from the organization in August 2008, after Lab Band board members found discrepancies in financial records. Greg Young, who founded the organization in the 1990s, handled the Lab Band’s accounts, along with his wife.

Ray Sanford, president of the Lab Band board, participated in a grand jury conducted by the DA’s office earlier this month. He said he was not surprised by the charges, saying they were consistent with the information Lab Band had provided investigators.

“Everyone wants some closure on this,” he said.

The Youngs are scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, for a plea change hearing.

Greg and Patti are friends of mine. I met them when they owned the guitar shop, and I also went to church with them. I have no doubt they are sorry for what they have done and will now do what is right for the community. Greg always told me "it's in God's hands" and I believe his sincerity. It greatly saddens me to read this story so now let the courts handle the situation. It does nobody any good to name call or ask for prison time. How is the money going to be paid back if they sit in prison? That would just lead to more tax dollars.

Penelop-The Board of Directors should be thanked? A good non-profit Board would never let this happen.

It is just sad. I knew Mr. Young for years and never expected this. Just sad. I also feel sad for those who seem to find glee in villifying people. Let the Courts sort it out and quit trying to throw salt into the wounds.

Stealing from nonprofits is an American way of life, I don't see why this couple should be in any more trouble than any other charity founder. When will people realize that "nonprofit" doesn't coexist with capitalism? Everything in this country is for-profit, don't be fooled otherwise.

kids and creepy adults. Is it ever going to get any better? I guess they go back to their roots.

I really don't understand. These lying deceiving con artists should go to PRISON. Is the DA a friend of them?? Isn't it a federal crime to steal and embezzle in that amount, taking advantage of children???

Coquillian:...I wish you blissful ignorance through all the days of your entire life.

I'm worried that they'll still find a way to wiggle out of it. After doing some online research I'm concerned that between now and the plea hearing a behind the scenes deal will be made between the Youngs and the Lab Band Board - a Civil Compromise (see oregoncrimes.com/theft) Originally the board didn't want to pursue charges being brought against the Youngs....

I don't have to pray that I won't be prosecuted, I simply don't commit crimes. Not too hard to do. But it would be nice if the comments stuck to the actual issue and not to everyone's own personal issue.

Actually, you deserved that Mr. Allen...

justmusin wrote on Sep 25, 2009 9:00 AM:

Right on Penelop - no matter the consequences, they'll never be able to repay the damage they have caused. Their greed and lies destroyed a local teacher's life and livelihood, yet they will never have to answer for that..

penelop wrote on Sep 24, 2009 3:06 PM:

I know these kinds of people. They come across as caring and selfless, then you find out later that they were lying right to your face. Wonder how much money they REALLY took. Probably never find out. That board of directors should be thanked for being savvy enough to spot the lies.

Lab Band Parent wrote on Sep 24, 2009 12:26 PM:

Just the tip of the iceberg. Only a three year audit is allowed by the Oregon Department of Justice. So much more (in dollars and deceit) that the public does not know. These people not only stole money from the kids, but stole from everyone that donated their time and money in good faith. It split the organization - pitting parent against parent and child against child as people chose sides. Funds were depleted and hearts broken as we had to face reality and come to grips with the betrayal of two who had us totally fooled.

Coquillian : Harping? when I see these felony criminals getting less time then me? Corrupt cops connived the family into getting the restraining order, but the cops didnt tell my family the terrorizing it would bring upon us. You better pray it doesnt happen to you.

You only get off light if you happen to be one of the good old boys. You know thats the rule of thumb here.

penelop wrote on Sep 24, 2009 7:35 AM:

these people are scum. your telling me that for 3 and a half years they were stealing from the program? those poor kid musicians. I know they really looked up to their directors. They must be so disappointed. I hope the program can keep going.

Coquillian wrote on Sep 23, 2009 4:59 PM:

Carefree highway, please quit harping on and on about your restraining order violation. The police CANNOT get an order against you, only the petitioner can. And you must have done something, or when you were supposed to show up to contest it you didn't. Also, there is a big difference3 in a restraining order and a no contact order. Anyway, most first time offenders get off light.

carefree highway wrote on Sep 23, 2009 4:06 PM:

Oh boy, another big crime small consequences story...here's 25 days in the local joint for your crime, we have more important people to sentence longer, like the innocent ones.
