The Coos County District Attorney’s Office has charged the former director of the Oregon Coast Lab Band and his wife with stealing more than $33,000 from the nonprofit organization.
Greg and Patricia Young were arraigned Monday in Coos County Circuit Court, each on charges including three counts of aggravated first-degree theft and four counts of first-degree theft.
Each aggravated count constitutes theft of at least $10,000, while the charges of first-degree theft account for more than $750 in stolen property, said deputy district attorney Oubonh White.
The thefts occurred over seven six-month periods, dating back to January 2005, White said.
Greg Young resigned from the organization in August 2008, after Lab Band board members found discrepancies in financial records. Greg Young, who founded the organization in the 1990s, handled the Lab Band’s accounts, along with his wife.
Ray Sanford, president of the Lab Band board, participated in a grand jury conducted by the DA’s office earlier this month. He said he was not surprised by the charges, saying they were consistent with the information Lab Band had provided investigators.
“Everyone wants some closure on this,” he said.
The Youngs are scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, for a plea change hearing.
