Led by 18 kills from Kara Young, Marshfield topped North Bend in four games in the annual Civil War volleyball match at Pirate Palace on Monday night.
The Pirates won the battle 25-21, 14-25, 25-23, 30-28 over the Bulldogs, who won the match last year on their home court.
“Going into it, we told each other we were going to put up our A game,” said Marshfield setter Nikki Gross, who had 37 assists.
North Bend coach Les Willett thought his team brought its top game as well, and the close games showed the teams were evenly matched.
“I thought we played hard,” Willett said. “I thought they played hard, too.”
Gross served four straight points to begin game one, keeping Marshfield just out of reach for the Bulldogs.
Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel was glad to see her team start strong, since the Pirates have been plagued by slow starts over the past few matches.
“I hope this can carry over into the season,” Montiel said.
North Bend took the second game with authority, winning 25-14 and serving up multiple aces, three of them by junior Haley Dunham. Dunham served nine total aces throughout the match, and had 15 kills.
The Bulldogs played from behind for most of game three, until Dunham stepped behind the service line. She rattled off six straight points and two aces to tie the game at 17.
Marshfield took back the lead and never let the Bulldogs catch up to go ahead in the match 2-1 with a 25-23 victory.
Game four started out close, with long volleys and diving saves. Marshfield sophomore Kasey Kuhn served four consecutive points to expand the Pirates’ lead to 18-11.
Montiel said the Pirates have been working on serving deep, because more teams have moved serve receive closer to the net.
“Typically we have a lot of missed serves,” Montiel said. “Kasey did a good job of serving the deep ball.”
Marshfield held its lead until match point, but a North Bend sideout put Dunham back to serve again. She served up another ace, then ran off five straight points, and the Bulldogs kept setting Alexandra Mateski. Mateski, a senior outside hitter, ended the game with 15 kills, coming on strong toward the end of the game.
The game was tied up four more times before Marshfield finally reached match point and put it away on senior Katherine Nicholls solid serves, winning 30-28.
Katelyn Richmond led the Pirates with 25 digs, and served up two aces. Young had 21 digs. Amber Owen, who finished strong in game four, ended with 17 kills.
Ashley Horlacher led the Bulldogs with 24 digs, and Katie Banta had 34 assists. Zoe Ottemiller was tough in defending Marshfield’s skilled hitters, and finished with four blacks.
North Bend visits Siuslaw on Wednesday to open up league play. Willett hopes his team will be ready to compete.
“It’s a big one on Wednesday,” Willett said. “It’d be nice to get that first one.”
Marshfield hosts Roseburg tonight, a team the Pirates lost to in three games last week. Gross said she’s confident Marshfield will play better this time, and thinks the home crowd will help.
