Marshfield shut down Ashland on the road 35-6 Friday night in the first of three straight road games.

The Pirates defense kept Ashland out of the end zone until the final two seconds of the game, when the Grizzlies scored on a Hail Mary pass.

The defense held Ashland to 40 yards rushing on 22 attempts.

Marshfield racked up 20 first downs, and quarterback Kyle Tedder passed 11 of 15 for 170 yards and ran for 109 yards. He had two passing touchdowns — one of them a 46-yard pass to Ryan Scoville — and one rushing touchdown. Cody Dew also completed a 66-yard touchdown pass to Callen Cooper.

“Offensively, we did a nice job moving the chains,” Marshfield coach Justin Ainsworth said. “The kids played fast, they played downhill.

“Kyle had a big night.”

Ainsworth said the Pirates had a great week of practice, and that carried over into the game.

“It’s a nice win,” Ainsworth said. “In the first road game, to come back here and play well, it gives the kids confidence.”

Bulldogs fall

North Eugene kept North Bend winless on the season, beating the visiting Bulldogs 28-9 on Friday.

Mike Bibbee rushed for 141 yards on 15 carries — 50 more than North Bend’s ground game generated — and scored twice for the Highlanders.

North Bend led 3-0 after the first quarter, on Ryan Johnson’s 22-yard field goal. But North Eugene surged to a 20-3 halftime lead when Dylan Lubonski and Alex Wilson connected on two touchdown passes, sandwiched around a 43-yard scoring run by Bibbee.

Bibbee added another score in the third quarter before North Bend’s Dalton Iveans hooked up with Travis Perez on a 49-yard pass to finish the scoring.

Iveans passed for 122 yards, while North Bend’s powerful ground game was held to 91 yards.

The Bulldogs have another tough road date next week, when they visit Phoenix, which is 3-0 after beating Brookings-Harbor 25-6 Friday night.

Panthers win

Gold Beach shut out visiting Illinois Valley 42-0 Friday night in the Panthers’ final tuneup before Sunset Conference play starts with a game at Bandon next week.

Josh Busko completed 7 of 10 passes for 139 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown pass to Richard Wallace and also had a scoring run for the Panthers.

Hugo Rosa and Travis Wood combined for 159 yards rushing and also each scored for Gold Beach.

Coquille tops Pirates

Coquille beat Glendale 33-6 Friday night with a team win.

Coach David Thomason was pleased with the team effort, and said Joe Harris and Nathan Huffman both had good games on offense, but that no individual performance stood out over others.

“It was a great team win overall,” Thomason said. “We finished strong and without distractions.

“The offense did a heck of a job.”

Coquille’s defense held Glendale scoreless in the first half, and didn’t let them in the end zone until there was about 5 minutes left in the third quarter.

Heston Altenbach had touchdown passes to Rex Dixon and Tyler Pelc and ran for another score. Harris had a 49-yard scoring run and Nathan Thurman also scored as the Red Devils improved to 2-0 heading into the Sunset Conference opener at Glide.

Tigers beat Oakland

Bandon’s Connor Jackson passed for three touchdowns and 157 yards in the Tigers’ 42-24 win at Oakland.

The Tigers were up 29-3 at the half, but gave up 14 points in the fourth quarter, one of them on a 50-yard run.

Bandon’s Jimmy Mack rushed 16 times for 61 yards, and Mike Bennett had five receptions for 61 yards. Gage Gant caught two touchdown passes and ran for another touchdown.

Oakland’s David Henry rushed 20 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Trojans pound Bobcats

Douglas sped to a 45-0 win over visiting Myrtle Point on Friday.

The Trojans rolled up 471 yards of total offense and limited the Bobcats to 170.

“That’s the fastest team we’ve ever played,” said Myrtle Point coach Brad Henshaw.

Sky Woods rushed for a team-high 107 yards for the Trojans and also caught a 33-yard scoring pass from Paul Polamalu. Ricky Cortez had a 70-yard touchdown reception and a scoring run and Jered Stoffal had a pair of touchdown runs for the Trojans, who improved to 3-0 with their third straight big offensive game.

Indians edge Vikings

Siuslaw lost a 41-40 shootout with host Molalla on Friday night when a two-point conversion attempt with 33 seconds to go came up short.

The Vikings amassed 605 yards of total offense, including 257 passing by John Johnson and 227 rushing by Sonny Tupua.

Johnson had two long touchdown passes — 77 yards to Dylan Alameda and 72 to Tupua — and completed 14 of 27 attempts.

Tupua also had three scoring runs, including one with 33 seconds to go that pulled the Vikings within a point. He had 366 total yards, including kickoff returns.

Molalla quarterback Jacob Moore rallied the Indians from a 28-7 deficit with three touchdown runs and three touchdown passes. He finished with 374 total yards.

The Vikings fell to 0-2 on the season.

Pirates top Bruins

Phoenix held Brookings-Harbor to 117 yards and beat the host Bruins 25-6 Friday night.

The Pirates built a 25-0 lead before the Bruins scored their only touchdown on an 88-yard kick return by Tyler Lueckfeld in the fourth quarter.

Phoenix quarterback Chris Kammel had two scoring runs and two touchdown passes, one an 85-yarder to Austin Toney.
