Training could help with sports
The Pacific School of Dance is looking for a few good young men for its dance program.
To entice them in the door, the school is offering free dance classes to the first 12 boys who sign up in the old Eastside Elementary School building at 303 D St. in Coos Bay. Boys from preschool age to teenagers are welcome.
This boys-only class, which started Sept. 15, will run for eight weeks. The boys will be trained in upper and lower body strength, how to move on and across the dance floor, flexibility, tumbling, agility and sword skills.
“In the past we’ve actually had a big boy’s program. We just haven’t had one for a while,” said school Administrative Director Pam Chaney. “They have the same thing in Eugene at the Oregon Ballet Academy. If it worked for them, it might work for us.”
The school currently has six boys, ages 3 to 13 years old enrolled in the program.
“Boys realize (after a few classes) how much dancing does for their physicality, especially in sports,” said Connie Hogge, program curriculum director.
If, during the eight-week course, a boy is interested in a different class, there is the opportunity for him to train in that style. The school offers classes in jazz, ballet, modern tap, pilates and floor bar, an exercise done on the floor which increases flexibility and alignment.
The hours for the boys-only class are from 5 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.
In the future, Chaney and Hogge hope to be able to partner boys with girls in dance performances. This will increase the types of performances the school can present, especially in ballet.
