Marshfield hits the road for the first time this week, while a handful of other South Coast football teams are seeking their first victories.

The Pirates travel to Ashland after losing at home to Marist last week. Marshfield coach Justin Ainsworth said he hasn’t had any trouble motivating the kids for the game.

“I think we’ve got the kids’ attention with Ashland,” he said, adding that nobody around the program could remember the last time the Pirates won on Ashland’s field.

“For whatever reason, we play really well against Ashland at home, and we go down there, and they play really well at home,” he said.

The Grizzlies present a different challenge from Marist, a big, physical club.

“They play fast,” Ainsworth said. “They’re going to get to the football. They’re very scrappy. They’re well-coached.”

The biggest challenge will be keeping track of Ashland quarterback Jake Scarminach, whom Ainsworth describes as quick and elusive.

“The key to the game is containing him,” Ainsworth said. “He’s their best football player. We need to know where he is.”

This is the first of three consecutive Fridays away from the friendly confines of Pete Susick Stadium for the Pirates.

“We’re looking forward to actually getting on the road,” Ainsworth said. “We’re looking at the big picture. Each challenge is going to help us down the road.”

While Marshfield is 1-1 on the season, Far West League schools North Bend and Siuslaw both hit the road still seeking their first win.

The Bulldogs travel to North Eugene on Friday, while Siuslaw heads to Molalla.

North Bend is in the midst of four straight road games to open the year. The Bulldogs travel to Phoenix next week and then finally have a home game against Sweet Home on Oct. 2.

Meanwhile, in the Sunset Conference, the teams are in their final week of tune-ups before league play starts.

Gold Beach hosts Illinois Valley, while Bandon and Myrtle Point are on the road at Oakland and Douglas, respectively, all seeking their first wins after losing their openers last week.

Coquille and Reedsport, which both won their opening games last week, play on their home fields again against Glendale and Waldport, respectively.

Powers, which opened Skyline League play with a win last week, has the week off.
