Volleyball Recap: Tigers rally for victory

Bandon rallied from a two-game deficit to beat visiting Gold Beach, 21-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-15, 15-3 on Tuesday in the Sunset Conference opener for both schools.

“I’m excited,” said first-year Bandon head coach Courtney Freitag. “It’s nice to have the first league game out of the way and with a win.”

She said the girls persevered during the match.

“The girls didn’t give up and they just got stronger as we went on,” she said.

Grace Garrett had 23 kills and 21 digs for the Tigers. Karli Crook added five kills, six digs and six aces and Kacy Crook added six digs and three aces. Kelsey Hinojosa had 30 assists, five digs and six aces and Marissa Ramos had 16 digs.

For the Panthers, Frankie Lemmons had five kills, while Katherine Zuber had six kills and three digs and Lily Miller had six kills and Lindsey McDonald had eight digs.

Bobcats beat Braves

Myrtle Point topped host Reedsport, 17-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 in the Sunset Conference opener Tuesday night.

Peyton Babb had 13 kills and 14 digs for Myrtle Point. Jasmin Grantham added 20 assists and Kaitlyn McCollum added 10 kills and five blocks.

Monica Vaughn had 10 kills and two aces for the Braves. Taylor Lewis had 30 assists, three kills and four saves. Eden Huebner added seven kills, five aces and a block and libero Caitlin Reilley had 10 digs.

Wildcats top Devils

Glide beat visiting Coquille 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20.

Jessica Strader and Marissa Duarte each had seven kills and 12 assists for the Wildcats, while Katie Fugate and Rashauna Belloir combined for 25 digs.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils struggled after losing two players during the match. Nikki Hall had nine kills before leaving match during the second game when she started to feel ill. Then middle hitter Karlie Libby suffered a dislocated shoulder.

“If it could go wrong tonight, it did go wrong,” said first-year Coquille coach Danielle McKinley. “The girls played hard, hustled and gave it their all, but just didn’t have enough tonight.”

Chelsy Forbes had 14 assists for Coquille, while Allison Cook had four kills and three aces and played strong defense at the net.

Challengers top Chieftains

Cascade Christian beat host Rogue River 25-22, 25-13, 25-13 in the league opener Tuesday.

Becca Sellers had 16 kills and Amanda Kinney added 14 kills for the Challengers.

Skyline League

Monarchs tip Cruisers

Umpqua Valley Christian beat visiting Powers 25-27, 25-14, 25-18, 22-25, 18-16 in the Cruisers’ league opener Tuesday.

“The last set was point-for-point,” said Powers coach Beth Rector. “It was one of those that could go either way.

“We missed way too many serves, but other than that the girls gave a lot of effort and a lot of heart.”

It was the first time the Monarchs beat the Cruisers in Rector’s three years coaching in Powers.

Leeanna Sears led the Cruisers with 11 kills, 25 digs and three aces. Liz Linderman had 10 kills and four aces for the Cruisers, while KC Carter had 16 assists and Ashlee Blanton had 26 digs.

Beth Hallman had 13 kills and Samantha Seamans recorded 21 assists and four aces for UVC.

Elkton beats Pacific

Elkton beat host Pacific 25-22, 25-14, 25-13 in the Skyline League opener for both schools Tuesday.

Devon Ashdown had five aces and eight assists for the Pirates, while Jesse Culley had five kills and two blocks.

Chris Evoniuk had eight aces and eight assists for the Elks. Rachel Winslow added six assists and five kills, while Hannah Parker had five blocks.

“I think you could tell it was the first league match,” Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag said. “For the first league game, there were some good things on both sides of the net. I think it’s going to get better.”

Nonleague

Indians top Pirates

Roseburg beat visiting Marshfield 25-13, 25-20, 25-17 on Tuesday.

Kara Young had six kills and 10 digs for the Pirates. Nikki Gross had 11 assists and Katelyn Richmond had 11 digs.

“We still lost, but we played better tonight, so that was a positive,” said Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel.

The Indians will visit Marshfield on Tuesday, one day after the Pirates host North Bend in the annual Civil War match.

Vikings win

Siuslaw beat visiting Tillamook 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 in a nonleague match on Tuesday at Florence.

Jenna Hanslits was 19-for-19 serving with nine aces, all coming on jump serves. She had a 10-point service run in the first game to turn the match in Siuslaw’s favor and also had nine kills in the match.

Seabre Church had 11 kills and Leigh Aurich had six digs, two aces and 23 assists.
