The Sunset Conference and Skyline Leagues open their volleyball seasons today, with several South Coast schools in action.
In the Sunset Conference, Myrtle Point visits Reedsport, Gold Beach is at Bandon and Coquille travels to Glide. The league’s other two teams, Cascade Christian and Rogue River, play in the Rogue Valley.
In the Skyline League, Powers visits Umpqua Valley Christian and Pacific hosts Elkton.
The Far West League starts its counting season next week, while the Midwestern League does not begin conference play until the following week.
The area’s soccer teams also begin league play this week, with the exception of Marshfield.
In the boys Far West League, which includes the joint teams from Coquille (with Myrtle Point) and Pacific (with Bandon), Coquille is at Pacific and Douglas travels to Brookings-Harbor today. Sutherlin beat South Umpqua 5-0 to open the season on Monday.
Gold Beach begins its Class 3A-2A-1A season with a home match against Creswell.
In Class 4A-3A-2A-1A girls District 3, North Bend hosts Umpqua Valley Christian.
Pirates fall to Summit
Marshfield’s boys suffered a tough 4-0 preseason loss Saturday to visiting Summit.
Coach Carl Kennedy made some formation changes after Marshfield tied with North Bend in its opening match last week, but getting shut out was not the result he wanted.
“The changes weren’t as effective as I thought,” Kennedy said. “We’re still doing some tweaking.”
Kennedy also acquired some new players after the North Bend game and tried them out on the field, but the plan didn’t mesh. He will return to the original plan, called the midfield control formation, which has emphasis on a stronger midfield.
“We didn’t have a very good attack at all,” Kennedy said. “It was more on Marshfield’s attack than how they (Summit) defended.”
Kennedy took some positives out of the loss.
“We never gave up,” he said. “The kids never got their heads down.”
The Pirates don’t start league play until next week, and Kennedy will use tonight’s game at Grants Pass to work out the kinks.
“I’m using this as my last opportunity before league play,” Kennedy said. “We’ll see how effective we are with the changes.”
