North Bend’s volleyball team took second place in the Roseburg Invitational on Saturday, losing in the championship match to the host Indians in a tournament that included seven Class 6A schools and a number of ranked teams from Class 5A, 4A and 3A.

“It was a great day for North Bend volleyball,” said Bulldog coach Les Willett. “This was very much a team effort and I was pleased how we came together as a team.”

The Bulldogs started the day by winning their four-team pool, beating Cascade Christian 25-23, 25-16; topping South Medford, 25-22, 25-22; and splitting with Grants Pass, 25-18, 20-25. Willett said he used all 12 of his players in the last game against Grants Pass because the Bulldogs already had secured the top seed for the pool.

In the quarterfinals, North Bend topped Eagle Point 25-14, 25-12. In the semifinals, the Bulldogs lost the first game against Sprague 25-16, but bounced back to win the other two 25-21, 15-7. Alexandra Mateski had six straight service points to give the Bulldogs the lead in the second game and Camille Deming and Justine Head both had key service runs in the third game.

Roseburg overwhelmed the Bulldogs in the championship match, winning 25-10, 25-12.

“Roseburg is highly ranked in 6A for a reason, and they showed us,” Willett said.

Mateski finished the day with 36 kills, 22 digs and four blocks, while fellow outside hitter Haley Dunham had 34 kills, 14 digs and six aces. Middle hitter Kristen Banta had 19 kills and eight blocks, while Zoe Ottemiller had nine kills and seven blocks. Setter Katie Banta finished with 81 assists, six kills and 19 digs, while right-side hitter Mallory Rose had 10 kills.

On defense, Head had 17 digs and Deming finished with six digs and three aces. Libero Ashley Horlacher finished with 58 digs.

The Bulldogs host Willamette on Thursday, the first match on North Bend’s new gym floor.

The tournament did not go nearly as well for Marshfield.

“We played really inconsistent all day long and never really got anything going,” coach Tammie Montiel said.

In pool play, the Pirates split with South Eugene 17-25, 26-24; lost to Crater 25-22, 25-23; and were beaten by Sprague 25-15, 25-17.

That put Marshfield in the consolation bracket, where the Pirates were eliminated in their first match by West Salem, 15-25, 25-22, 15-12.

For the day, Kara Young had 18 kills and 12 digs, Nikki Gross had 48 assists, Kirby Neale had 15 kills and Katelyn Richmond finished with 18 digs.

Reedsport tournament

Oakland topped Myrtle Point 25-17, 25-18 to take the championship at the annual Reedsport tournament on Saturday.

The Oakers finished second in their pool, going 4-2 in matches against Reedsport, Glide and North Douglas. The host Braves also went 4-2, and were the No. 1 seed for bracket play, but lost to Myrtle Point 25-10, 25-16 in the semifinals.

The Bobcats had finished second behind Siuslaw in the other pool. The Vikings swept their pool matches against Myrtle Point, Yoncalla and Toledo to win the pool, while Myrtle Point swept Yoncalla and split with Toledo.

Oakland topped Siuslaw in the semifinals 25-23, 19-25, 25-19.

Bruins win tourney

Brookings-Harbor continued a strong start to its season by winning the Arcata Tournament in California on Saturday.

The Bruins, who beat Del Norte for the first time in a decade earlier in the week, swept their three pool matches against Arcata, Eureka and Clear Lake. In bracket play, the Bruins beat Mendocino 25-12, 25-16; topped Yreka 25-16, 25-20; and beat Eureka in the championship match, 25-8, 19-25, 15-9.

“This was a total team effort with everyone contributing to all aspects of the game,” Brookings-Harbor coach Lori Cooper said. “What is so nice is having so many who can contribute both offensively and defensively.”
