NEW YORK — Derek Jeter broke the New York Yankees’ hit record held by Lou Gehrig for more than seven decades, but Baltimore overcame an early deficit for a 10-4 victory Friday night in a game delayed twice by rain.

Jeter’s third-inning single to right field gave him 2,722 hits, one more than Gehrig, whose Hall of Fame career was cut short by illness in 1939.

The captain added an RBI single in the fourth that put the Yankees up 4-1 before the Orioles rallied against Andy Pettitte and the New York bullpen.

Blue Jays 6, Tigers 4: Aaron Hill had four hits and the Toronto Blue Jays extended the Detroit Tigers’ slump.

The AL Central leaders have lost four straight to Kansas City and Toronto after a six-game winning streak. The Blue Jays won for just the third time in their last 13 road games.

Angels 7, White Sox 1: Joe Saunders (13-7) won his fourth straight start, Bobby Abreu drove in two runs without the benefit of a hit and Los Angeles beat the White Sox.

Vladimir Guerrero and Maicer Izturis each had two RBIs as the Angels’ fourth straight win and seventh in eight games increased their AL West lead to 51⁄2 over the Rangers.

Royals 2, Indians 1, 12 innings: Miguel Olivo homered with one out in the 12th inning after David DeJesus saved the game for Kansas City with two accurate throws.

Royals ace Zack Greinke held the Indians to one run in seven innings, but ended up with his eighth no-decision of the season, the first Kansas City has won. He has received 29 runs in his combined 15 starts of losses and no-decisions.

Athletics 12, Twins 5: Jack Cust hit one of Oakland’s five home runs and Clayton Mortensen earned his first major league victory.

Mark Ellis, Cliff Pennington, Daric Barton and Kurt Suzuki also homered for an Oakland team that entered the game last in the American League in home runs.

Mariners rained out:Ichiro Suzuki’s pursuit of another milestone was put on hold Friday night when the Seattle Mariners game against the Texas Rangers was postponed by rain.

The perennial All-Star needs four hits to reach 200 for a ninth straight season, an accomplishment that would break a more than 100-year-old record.

NATIONALLEAGUE

Phillies 4, Mets 2: Cole Hamels pitched 6 2-3 effective innings, a new-look bullpen got the last seven outs and Philadelphia beat the New York Mets 4-2.

Jimmy Rollins and Pedro Feliz had RBI singles and Shane Victorino hit a career-high three doubles for the NL East-leading Phillies, who entered with a five-game lead over Florida.

Dodgers 10, Giants 3: Hiroki Kuroda dodged the barrel of a broken bat that flew in his direction and retired 19 straight during one stretch, Casey Blake homered and the Dodgers matched their 2008 win total by beating the archrival Giants.

Kuroda (6-6), making just his second start since missing three weeks after sustaining a concussion Aug. 15, quickly ducked out of the way and off the mound when Matt Cain’s bat splintered on his third-inning groundout and sailed onto the dirt past second base.

Rockies 4, Padres 1: Yorvit Torrealba hit a three-run double in the ninth inning off closer Heath Bell to lift the Rockies to a win over the Padres.

Torrealba’s bases-loaded hit into the left-center field gap allowed the Rockies to pull out a comeback win and stay two games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Braves 1, Cardinals 0: Jair Jurrjens worked eight scoreless innings, overcoming another light offensive showing behind him in the Braves’ victory over the Cardinals.

Albert Pujols had a forgettable game for St. Louis, committing two fielding errors at first base while going 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and no balls out of the infield against the 23-year-old right-hander. The NL Central leaders lost for the first time in 17 games on a day when the second-place Cubs also won, shaving their formidable lead to 101⁄2 games.

Astros 9, Pirates 1: Carlos Lee hit a three-run homer, Lance Berkman added a solo shot and the Astros beat the Pirates.

Cubs 6, Reds 4: Geovany Soto homered for the first time since July 10, and the Cubs beat the Reds for their first four-game winning streak in nearly two months.

Soto, the 2008 NL Rookie of the Year, had a sacrifice fly in the second inning and hit a solo homer in the fourth, his 10th this season. He batted .140 (7 for 50) with one home run and four RBIs from Aug. 7, when he came off the disabled list, through Sept. 4, and has four hits and six RBIs since over three games.

Nationals 5, Marlins 3: Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman homered and the Washington Nationals won in Miami for the first time this year, beating the Marlins.

Pinch-hitter Mike Morse broke a tie in the sixth inning with a two-out, two-run double for the Nationals, who had lost their six previous games at Florida this year. Mike MacDougal got the final five outs, completing a five-hitter for his 15th save in 16 chances.

Brewers 6, Arizona 3: Ryan Braun homered, doubled and drove in three runs to help the Brewers break out of a week-long hitting slump with a victory over the Diamondbacks.

Braun hit a two-run line drive homer down the right-field line in the first inning off Doug Davis (7-13).

He also doubled in Mike Cameron in the third. It was Braun’s 29th homer of the season and 100th of his career.
