Reedsport opened Shane Nelson’s coaching tenure with a 28-3 win over visiting Oakland on Friday.
Jason Fegles had three touchdown passes for the Braves, scoring strikes of 6 yards to Ismael Osorio, 62 yards to Kole Freestone and 42 yards to Cory Christoffersen. Tyler Strowbridge had the other touchdown on an 8-yard run. Fegles also had a 44-yard pass to Strowbridge, and finished the game 4-for-7 for 154 yards.
Keely McDuffy carried the ball 14 times for 161 yards for the Braves.
“The kids played really hard,” said Nelson.
On the other hand, he said, “They made a lot of mistakes.”
The Braves gave up one fumble and one interception and also had a muffed snap on a punt.
“It gives us something to work on,” Nelson said.
Cruisers win
Powers opened the season with a 38-26 win over host Days Creek on Friday.
“I’m real excited,” said Powers coach Nick Gonzales. “The hard work they put in all spring and summer paid off.
“You can tell we’re faster and stronger.”
Sophomore Justin Flatt, who made his debut at quarterback in his first high school game, rushed for three touchdowns, including a pair of fourth-quarter scores that gave Powers the lead after Days Creek entered the final frame with a 26-24 advantage.
Flatt’s last TD, a 49-yard scamper, was one of three big plays by the Cruisers.
Gabe Sotelo ran for a 48-yard score on the Cruisers’ first play from scrimmage and George Lewis later had a 50-yard scoring run.
Powers now has a week off to prepare for a game at Butte Falls, which opened Skyline League play with a 72-6 win over North Lake on Friday.
“They’re coming along,” said Gonzales, whose team matched its win total from last season. “The line blocked really good. Besides a couple of long passes, defensively we did pretty good.”
Cubs beat Bulldogs
North Bend fell to 0-2 on the season, falling 16-13 on the road to Newport on Friday night.
“We played with a lot of heart and a lot of effort, but we made too many mistakes,” North Bend coach Rick Taylor said.
The Bulldogs had three turnovers in the game and generated just 182 yards of total offense, 168 on the ground.
Newport took a 16-6 lead on a touchdown by Tristan Metcalf in the fourth quarter. Jake Lucero scored on an 11-yard run for the Bulldogs, but it was too little, too late.
Lucero scored North Bend’s first touchdown on a 65-yard interception return in the first quarter. He also led North Bend’s offense with 71 yards on 13 carries.
The Bulldogs are on the road for the third straight game next week when they visit Phoenix.
Knights top Panthers again
North Valley scored in the final minute to edge visiting Gold Beach 13-9 Friday night.
The Knights were the only team to beat the Panthers in the regular season last year, and repeated the feat when Ryan Anderson connected with Nick DeChenne on an 11-yard touchdown pass with just 38 seconds remaining.
The Panthers had taken the lead on a 62-yard run by Travis Wood earlier in the fourth quarter.
Gold Beach rushed for 246 yards, including 78 by Wood, 77 by Jaden West and 55 by Hugo Rosa.
The Panthers also did not commit any turnovers and had just two penalties.
But they couldn’t stop the late score by the Knights. Anderson completed 12 of 20 passes for 125 yards, including the winning score.
Gold Beach’s other points came on a 41-yard field goal by Todd Martin just before halftime.
Lancers edged Bobcats
A fourth-quarter rally came up just for Myrtle Point as South Umpqua edged the Bobcats 21-20 Friday.
Myrtle Point scored twice in the last seven minutes to rally from a 21-6 deficit. But a two-point conversion pass with 1:26 to go in the game was off the mark.
“We played like it was our first game,” said Myrtle Point coach Brad Henshaw.
Myrtle Point pulled within 21-14 on the second of two touchdown passes from Kyle Davis to Ryan Hamilton with 6:36 to go. After the Bobcats got the ball back, Davis connected with Matt Miranda on a 23-yard pass to set up a 1-yard run by Nic Canaday. But the Bobcats missed the extra point.
The Lancers scored twice in the opening minutes. David Huling caught a 72-yard pass from Josh Kennedy on the first play from scrimmage and Rory Costello scored on a 1-yard run after the Bobcats had a bad punt snap early in their own territory.
Henshaw was pleased with his team’s effort.
“We didn’t give up,” he said. “The last six minutes, we played pretty well on offense.”
Vikings fall at home
Siuslaw lost for the first time at home since moving to its new stadium in 2002, falling to La Salle 28-13 in the season opener.
The Vikings outgained the Falcons 313 yards to 289, but were undone by four turnovers — two touchdowns and two interceptions. La Salle had just one turnover.
Siuslaw rushed for 242 yards, including 135 on 22 carries by sophomore Sonny Tupua. Sophomore quarterback John Johnson had one rushing and one passing touchdown.
La Salle’s Alex Larez rushed for 154 yards on 29 carries and scored twice.
