Marist runs past Pirates

Kyle Tedder’s 78-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Scoville did little to help Marshfield’s offense.
The longball came before halftime, but Marist had already scored 24 points and showed no sign of stopping.
The Spartans continued to rout the Pirates with a 45-18 victory at Pete Susick Stadium on Friday night in preseason action.
“It didn’t go as planned,” said Scoville, who caught two passes for 80 yards.
Senior Callen Cooper intercepted Marist quarterback Tevin Cheever on the Spartans’ first possession, but the Pirates ran three quick plays before punting. Marist took over, orchestrating an 18-play, 74-yard drive for its first touchdown.
In the middle of the scoring drive, Cheever went down with an injury, and junior Logan Silver stepped in for the rest of the game. Silver went 6-for-13 for 97 yards and one touchdown, but the goal-line player Marshfield couldn’t stop was Sam Hardin, who rushed 13 times for 62 yards and scored four touchdowns.
Marshfield coach Justin Ainsworth said the Pirates had trouble defending Marist’s ground game.
“At times we did a good job,” Ainsworth said. “We gave up too many third-down conversions.”
After Marist went up 14-0, the Pirates were hit with two penalties back to back, then called for holding later in that same possession. Marshfield racked up 10 penalties for 80 yards.
Ainsworth said it’s time to get back to the fundamentals so the Pirates don’t make those mistakes.
Marshfield gave up a safety on a botched snap, then another touchdown immediately. With more than two minutes left in the half, Tedder connected with Scoville on the long touchdown to give the Pirates some hope.
But Hardin had a different idea. He scored yet again for the Spartans, making it 31-6 at halftime.
“Offensively we didn’t get any push,” Ainsworth said. “We weren’t able to run the ball.”
After the half, Marshfield had its chances. Although the Pirates let Marist fake punt and run for a first down, the Marshfield defense forced Marist to punt again. A botched snap that Marist covered up deep in its own territory turned the ball over on downs.
The Pirates started on the Marist 26, with Tedder steering the team. Tedder threw a 25-yard pass to Joey Morgan, who had seven catches for 107 yards. A 1-yard touchdown run from Tedder and a missed two-point conversion put the score at 31-12.
Tedder, who completed 3 of 18 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns, said the loss wasn’t all about disappointment.
“It’s always disappointing to lose, but I think there are some things we can build on,” Tedder said. “That’s what preseason’s for. Once league comes, we’re going to be tuned and ready to go.”
Tedder connected with Chris Krajcir for a 6-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, but Marist’s lead was insurmountable. The Spartans scored one last touchdown for the final score.
Ainsworth was quick to point out that Marist’s talent served perspective for his team.
“Marist is a heck of a team,” he said. “That team’s going to be playing in December.
“It’s a long season. It’s going to be back to basics to work on fundamentals,” Ainsworth said.
Tedder echoed that sentiment.
“We’ve got eight more games,” he said.
Marshfield is on the road the next three weeks, starting with a game at Ashland. The Pirates then travel to Grants Pass and Jefferson of Portland.
