BANDON — Former Cranberry Festival Queen Julia Braun, a 2001 graduate of Bandon High School, has joined Teach For America. She’s headed for New Orleans.
“I decided to combine my interest in social change with my love for working with children by becoming a teacher,” she explained. “It was a complicated path to a simple revelation.”
The program enlists top college graduates to commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools, in exchange for extra training.
Only 15 percent of TFA’s record 35,000 applicants were accepted this year, a press release said. Those accepted for the program were selected for leadership abilities and strong record of achievement.
As an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, she worked as a nutrition educator on an American Indian reservation in Northern Wisconsin. Working in a number of communities in that area over the past four years, Braun found herself drawn to working with children.
Braun’s father, Wolf Daniel Braun, started The Cobbler’s Bench some 30 years ago and now lives in Hawaii. Julia’s brother, Peter, now owns the shop. Her mother, Joanne Drapkin of Bandon, taught in the Coquille School District for 23 years.
“My mother was a teacher in Coos County for my entire life, and some of the most important and influential people growing up were my teachers in Bandon,” Braun said.
Braun, who is single, graduated from Lewis & Clark College in 2005.
