REEDSPORT — Cody Savey really, really wants to work for a professional sports team.

The 2009 Reedsport Junior/Senior High School graduate has dreamed of it since childhood, he said, with early ambitions to be a well-recognized athlete.

Several benefactors, including a regional division of Freemasons, would have it no other way.

The Coos Bay Valley of the Scottish Rite Freemasons of Oregon awarded Savey a $1,000 scholarship, bringing the soon-to-be University of Oregon student’s total scholarships to about 12 — nearly a full ride, he said.

“Every little bit helps,” Savey said.

In high school, Savey was a competitor. The Reedsport resident played golf, basketball, football and ran cross country. He attended Boys State in 2008 and served as student body president at Reedsport his senior year.

“It goes without saying that we’re proud of our candidate,” said Coos Bay Freemasons spokesman Arlie Thomason.

Savey said he may not play college sports, but has not lost his drive to be involved with athletics.

“I want to be the best at everything. I do. And sports has everything I love about competition,” he said.

Now Savey is off to college to major in economics. Maybe he’ll market sports teams, maybe he’ll manage one. He’ll find out when he gets there.

“I think once I go to college, I’ll be a little more receptive of the possibilities,” Savey said.

The Oregon Scottish Rite Education Foundation awarded 14 $1,000 scholarships around the state this year and a single $5,000 scholarship.

Money for the scholarships is raised through membership in local Freemasons groups, as well as private contributions.

It’s awarded based mainly on a student’s grades and financial needs, Thomason said.

Thomason added that recipients do not have to be associated with the Freemasons.
