North Bend’s volleyball team opened the season with a pair of losses to tough Eugene squads on the road Tuesday.
Marist, ranked fourth in the preseason Class 4A coaches poll, beat the Bulldogs 25-18, 25-16, 18-25, 25-22. Sheldon, ranked third in Class 6A, followed with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-6 win over North Bend.
“Overall, I was pleased with our first match of the season,” said North Bend coach Les Willett. “Both matches were against very good competition.”
North Bend had several highlights in the Marist match. Alexandra Mateski had 12 kills and Haley Dunham added nine kills and a stuff block. Katie Banta had 12 assists and three aces, and freshman Kristen Banta added four kills and an ace.
Katie Banta helped the Bulldogs win the third game of the match with a four-point service run and her sister served nine straight points in the fourth game.
Willett said the Bulldogs played tough defense in the Sheldon match, but the Irish had too much firepower.
“Several North Bend players made great digs to keep the ball in play two or three times before Sheldon could find the floor,” Willett said.
Justine Head and Ashley Horlacher each had six digs against the Irish. Mateski had five kills.
North Bend travels to Junction City on Thursday and plays in the annual Roseburg tournament Saturday.
Red Devils win
Coquille opened the season with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-8 win over visiting Waldport in the first match for new Coquille head coach Danielle McKinley on Tuesday.
