One Eugene man is dead and a woman is seriously injured after an ATV crash Saturday night in the South Jetty Dune Recreation Area south of Florence.

At 11:30 p.m., a Lane County sheriff’s deputy saw a 2008 Yamaha 700cc ATV carrying two occupants crash, Oregon State Police said in a press release. The ATV was driving through the Goose Pasture Sand Flats in the dark, and at a high speed, when it struck a berm ejecting the driver, Casey Renfroe, 20, and passenger, Teybra Welsh, 18.

Renfroe was pronounced dead at the scene. Welsh, of Veneta, was initially taken to Peace Harbor Medical Center in Florence, but later transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Riverbend.

As of this morning, she was in serious condition.

Neither person was wearing a helmet.

I agree with the Local Lady, its the same story EVERY year..."Out of towners die in fatal ATV accident" "Holiday weekend brings casualties to the coast" blah blah blah. Don't preach about humanity when there's obviously a connection between people who don't know what can happen out there that THINK they do and pay the ultimate price. It would be a tragedy if it was a freak accident but it happens nearly every weekend of the summer.

If you are going to be an idiot and go screaming across the dunes in unfamiliar territory at night with no helmet you are definitely about to reap what you sow. I'm not sorry this happened because they are both obviously fools that lacked the common sense necessary to ride responsibly. Ah to be young and invincible!!!

Regardless of whether the parents wanted to help or not is a moot point. They are both adults in the eyes of the law and can do as they wish. It is a tragedy anytime young people such as this die or go through such an ordeal. I feel for them both and their families. Let's have some humanity and sympathy rather than mean-spirited griping about how they're stupid kids. blah, blah, blah These kids had their whole lives in front of them.

In congested areas, where there is a lot of ATV traffic, there should be a GPS system required to alert riders to others in their area. With a helmet on going 60mph you are not going to hear a truck coming from your blind side, but if you had an ear piece that told you to look out for another rider within half a mile of you it might just save a life. If you were alone and wrecked or stranded your position could be seen by the authorities. You could rent the systems out to people or they could purchase one for each atv.

Marine4Life: If you think about it...why would it be sensible to legally not wear a helmet yet have to climb in your truck and put on a seatbelt? Its another way for us people with self-worth to protect ourselves from the clueless public. You'd be insane not to wear a helmet, or seatbelt, or a life jacket in parasailing for that matter. But unlike you and me, others who happen to run into god's fate more often then most depend on those laws to live. I think the idea with helmet laws also applies to protect us from eachother out there. Sure, you can ride around helmet free, feeling all "declared" that you had to the choice to, but lets here your opinion when some idiot from California comes blindly over boxcar and lands right on top of you.

Yes, it is very tragic and sad that this occurred but obviously the parents that are probably grief stricken right now weren't present at the time were they?...nor were they advising their children in any way if they weren't physically present. Sure, they're both "adults"..but really, how grown-up were you at 18? It seems to me this is yet another case of bad parenting and natural selection. Sorry for the harshness but crap like this wouldn't happen if people wouldn't let their young sprite sons take their girlfriends out on daddy's expensive quad for joy rides without proving some kind of common sense and safety first.

I think this horrible. But I also think that when you are considered an adult, (18 and older) that you should have the right not to wear a helmet if you dont want to. everyone knows the dangers of riding in the dunes without one, but we still should have the freedom to make choices about our own well being. Why be a free nation if the government makes all the choices for us even if that choice may cost you your life.

To Mindtwisted, did you seem to forget that someone lost their life here and another is in critical condition, and maybe just maybe some of their family members or friends might just be reading your horrible remark? You truly do have a "twisted mind"! My heart goes out to the families of these two people.

mindtwisted wrote on Sep 8, 2009 1:43 PM:

Well, now I guess we all know why you don't drive an ATV at high speeds, at midnight, without helmets, through an unfamiliar area filled with sand dunes and rugged wilderness...and I'm sure drugs/alcohol had nothing to do with this, right?

Thank God these idiots didn't hurt anyone else during their little pre-coital joy-ride.

The Brutal Truth wrote on Sep 8, 2009 11:52 AM:

Very sad.

Maybe some day the USFS will wake up and make helmets mandatory on the dunes.

I'm an avid off-road motorcycle enthusiast, and I wear about every peice of safety gear I can get my hands on. I'm always blown away by the number of riders out on the dunes without helmets.
