WASHINGTON — Take responsibility for your education. Go to class and listen. Don’t let failures define you.

That’s the advice President Barack Obama gave schoolchildren today in a speech that drew fire even before he delivered it.

“We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect so you can help solve our most difficult problems,” Obama said. “If you don’t do that — if you quit on school — you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country.”

The White House posted Obama’s remarks on its Web site Monday.

The president delivered the talk at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va., a Washington suburb. The speech was broadcast live on C-SPAN and on the White House Web site.

Students at Madison Elementary School in Coos Bay missed President Obama’s speech this morning, but Principal Arlene Roblan has plans to let them see it if they want to.

She recorded the president’s message and plans to screen it later this week.

Any student or parent who doesn’t want to see the recording can opt out, Roblan said. She’s heard from two parents, one who said not to show the speech, the other asking that it definitely be aired.

Superintendent Bob De La Vergne sent an e-mail to teachers, telling them it’s up to them to show the speech, though students can ask not to watch.

“Broadcasting of the President’s speech is at the discretion of the classroom teacher,” his e-mail said. “If you choose to broadcast the speech, please have an alternative activity planned for those students who choose to opt out.”

In the prepared remarks, Obama tells young people that all the work of parents, educators and others won’t matter “unless you show up to those schools, pay attention to those teachers.”

Obama’s planned talk has proven controversial, with several conservative organizations and individuals accusing him of trying to pitch his arguments too aggressively in a local-education setting. White House officials, including Education Secretary Arne Duncan, have said the allegations are silly.

Obama makes no reference in his prepared remarks to the uproar surrounding his speech. Nor does he make an appeal for support for tough causes such as his health care overhaul. He uses the talk to tell kids about his at-times clumsy ways as a child and to urge them to set goals and work hard to achieve them.

“I think it is a very good speech,” Loudoun County, Va., school superintendent Edgar Hatrick told WTOP News in Washington, “but it’s just not on the first day of school very convenient for everybody to stop in the middle of lunch and to stop everything else they’re doing and hear the live broadcast.”

Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt told KDKA Radio: “If the president wants to speak to the students of America and talk about the importance of academic achievement and working hard, that is a wonderful thing and ought not to be the subject of debate.”

Because I disagree with a Negro President does not make me a racist. I'm just very suspicious of many of his programs and appointees. If one is blinded by party allegiance, as some seem to be in their posts, and not contecting the dots, then for them ignorance is bliss.

Ok, let's keep it simple. Do you think more and better education will make America a better country?

Mouse17, Thank you for your courteous reply to my question. Does the military help and require a GED before entering the Service? I respect the Armed Forces and I believe that getting a GED is more problematic than a high school diploma.

Gary wrote on Sep 15, 2009 12:15 PM:

Fairplay, of course you have trouble finding fault in Obama's speech, could it be because you are a liberal and close your eyes and ears to any other information? Being a USAFSS Veteran I do realize the requirements of enlisting. However it has not always been that way and many have served 20 to 30 years in the military after dropping out of school. I know that is hard for you to understand because you obviously think if a teen drops out of school he will be stupid all his life, which is not true.

No God, you never disappoint me, you can not help but diplay your ignorance.
I didn't say all children are brainwahed but it appears many of them have been in the past, proof in point look how many people voted for Obams etc. There are "THANK GOD" parents that inform their children of the misinformation they are being fed in some govt. schools.

good lord..I read the speech....NOTHING wrong with it. I am very conservative but come on people...stop the conspiracy theory crap and allow the man the chance to encourage our young people to excel.

Fairplay, not all dropouts are losers. Some people drop out because the school system fails them. Many of these "dropouts" go on to get GEDs and even college degrees. I know several school dropouts who are now, 10 years later, productive members of society and even better off than some of their peers who stayed in school.

NOJOB wrote on Sep 15, 2009 9:34 AM:

Kids should stay in school!!! I don't know why all you conservatives have a BIG problem with that!

They need to get an education so they can get a good job and make lots of money and pay lots of taxes so folks who don't work as hard can get free stuff.

You people really don't get it, do you?????

FAIRPLAY
Thank you for asking. As you know it was a while ago that these family members enlisted in the military, but the truth still remains that you can quit school and still enlist without a high school diploma. The military will help any one that is interested in enlisting get a GED if they don't have a high school diploma. So the part in the speech I was up set about is “you're not just quitting on yourself, your quitting on your country”. The United States of America and Armed Forces don't turn away American people that want to fight, protect and defend their country.

Mouse17,
Wow. Defensive, much? Honestly I don't care what age group you were referring to. If a fifth-grader is thinking about dropping out of school we've definitely got bigger problems than whether their little egos can take being encouraged to step up and do themselves the favor of completing their education. And I'm pretty sure that in at least the last 15 years, or since my friends started enlisting they had to have a diploma BEFORE they could even get in. You can talk about what you know all you want and get snide about it, but it sounds like your information dates waaaaaay back.
Have a nice day.

Well said, Citizen. I have a son with Asperger's who hasn't yet entered kindergarten. I am afraid that his needs will not be adequately met in the classroom since he doesn't learn the "normal" way but he won't need special ed services since he's quite bright. I will be keeping home schooling and charter schools in mind as he grows older. Even if he didn't have this problem I would still consider them because I want to give my children the best possible education, which is not necessarily found in public school. And I know a girl who graduated highschool at 16, received her associates by 18 and is now at university. She is well ahead in life because she is motivated and ambitious. This kind of behavior should be encouraged and not seen as abandoning her highschool class.

Citizen wrote on Sep 14, 2009 11:57 AM:

I believe that public schools will be a thing of the past. Charter schools should replace them. The public schools do not produce a quality education for every student. Too many kids in a class room, not enough school days, dated ciriculum, limted access to technology, and facilities that are falling apart. Home schooling should be encouraged. I hear story after story of kids entering public schools after being home taught and reading far above their grade level. Yesterday I hear of a home schooled child who will have her associates before she graduates from high school. As far as any president telling kids to stay in school goes, naturally it should be seen as a good thing, but a public education isn't always the best option.

I know that joining the military you have to have a GED or a high school diploma. Where do you think the enlisted get their GED? The military helps them earn it. My dad quit school in the 8th grade joined the Army and lied about his age. (didn't earn a GED or diploma) My brother quit school joined the Army. My sister quit school joined the Navy. They both earned a GED from the military. So I don't need you to tell me what you need to join the military. I already know.

If you read my comments you will see that I was worried about is him leaving an impression on “K-6 grade” that the whole country will be disappointed in them if they quit school. He should have saved that part of the speech for the “older kids” 7-12. That is what this is all about T.B.T. Nothing more nothing less.

Con Queso wrote on Sep 11, 2009 9:27 PM:

I do agree that saying that those who quit school quit on their country adds a little bit of pressure. But for some other kids, that might be helpful. And even if it really is too harsh to say we all can say reasonably that when somebody quits school they quit on the themselves, which is the real tragedy. And for Mouse17, although many who have quit school have gone on to joint he military I'm pretty sure they require a diploma (or GED at the lease) to even think about enlisting these days.

Con Queso wrote on Sep 11, 2009 9:24 PM:

I am stunned by all of the comments here that people are offended the President of the United States wants to encourage kids to stay in school. Granted, there are many good parents in this country who instill in their kids the right attitudes about school, hard work and the right way to succeed. But there aren't enough. Some of our nation's kids aren't going to hear this message from anyone ... except Mr. Obama. And for those who are encouraged by their parents, what's wrong with some added encouragement? Are you really serious? Find something else to worry about. We have enough real problems.

Democrats complained in 1991 when then President George H. W. Bush broadcast a speech from a Northwest Washington junior high school. House Majority leader at the time, Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.), said "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students. And the president should be doing more about education than saying, 'Lights, camera, action.' "
Two House committees demanded that the department explain the use of its funds for the speech. Rep. Patricia Schroeder (D-Colo.), chairwoman of the Select Committee on Children, Youth and Families, said it was outrageous for the White House to "start using precious dollars for campaigns" when "we are struggling for every silly dime we can get" for education programs.

You know, because someone who thinks Obama is for death panels, killing our grandparents, and turning the US into the USSR is obviously a better role model than Obama, regardless of his politics.

I'm all for questioning decisions and policies, but I find it amusing that so many people believe so many silly things about this man. About the only thing I've learned thusfar is that he's not much different than any other President... so far, he doesn't have the guts to do the RIGHT thing, but he's early into his Presidency.
