A pass intended for North Bend’s Will Winfield (white jersey) is intercepted by Kyle Tedder of Marshfield near the goal in the first half of their opening season football game Friday night at Pete Susick Stadium. Also helping on the play for the Pirates were No. 21 Gino Harpold and No. 13 Callen Cooper in the back. For more on the game see page B1.
Marshfield’s Civil War win streak has extended into the Justin Ainsworth coaching era — but the Pirates had to work extra to get their 20th straight victory over North Bend.
Marshfield edged the Bulldogs 20-13 in overtime Friday night before a big crowd at Pete Susick Stadium, with Pirate quarterback Kyle Tedder scoring on a 25-yard option keeper on the second play of overtime and sealing the win by intercepting a desperation fourth-down pass by North Bend’s Dalton Iveans to end the Bulldogs’ OT possession.
The game was the season opener for both schools and doesn’t count in the official standings because it was an Oregon School Activities Association endowment contest.
But it does count in terms of bragging rights, and starts Ainsworth’s coaching career on the right foot. The former Marshfield player is just the fourth head coach in the past half-century at Marshfield.
Marshfield is home again next Friday, hosting traditional Class 4A power Marist of Eugene, while North Bend plays the second of four straight road games, traveling up the coast to Newport.
