For the first time in history, the Civil War game was forced into an overtime battle, with Marshfield quarterback Kyle Tedder rising to the occasion.

Tedder took the ball himself for the winning touchdown run from 25 yards out and then made the game-clinching interception in the Pirates’ 20-13 win over North Bend.

The victory was Marshfield’s 20th straight in the history of the crosstown rivalry, but it wasn’t as pretty as new coach Justin Ainsworth had hoped.

With four turnovers, a missed field goal in the waning seconds of regulation and an inability to capitalize on North Bend mistakes, Ainsworth said they need to work on the basics.

“We just quit relying on fundamentals,” Ainsworth said. “We quit tackling, we quit blocking.”

The Bulldogs made their own mistakes, with two interceptions and two fumbles, but had Marshfield on its heels. The Pirates scored two touchdowns on their first two possesions, but didn’t see the end zone again until overtime.

“We just took that as a motivator,” North Bend senior Cameron Seiger said about Marshfield’s quick start. “Our defense made a lot of good stops. You couldn’t ask for a better defense.”

North Bend got on the board with a 1-yard run from quarterback Dalton Iveans with 8 minutes left in the first half. Iveans faked a handoff to Jake Lucero and pulled the ball back on the way to the end zone.

A Marshfield fumble was recovered by Ryan Johnson, and interceptions by each quarterback ended the back-and-forth second quarter.

“It was a little rough,” Marshfield senior Callen Cooper said. “It’s not what we wanted going into the game.”

Iveans’ first and only completion of the game came on the game-tying touchdown pass to Seiger from 14 yards out in the fourth quarter. The extra point was blocked by Andy Post, leaving the score at 13-13.

Both teams then missed opportunities to win in regulation.

Iveans tossed an option pitch right to Marshfield’s Ryan Scoville, but Tedder followed by throwing a screen pass into the arms of Seiger.

The Bulldogs drove to Marshfield’s 35-yard line, but Cooper picked off a pass with 33 seconds to go. Tedder took the Pirates to North Bend’s 5-yard line with a long pass to tight end Tyler Klein, and lined up for a game-winning field goal. Iveans stormed off the left end and blocked the kick, but was called for off-sides. Tedder’s second attempt missed wide left, sending the game to overtime.

“It was nerve-wracking, but I knew our defense could hold the Dogs,” said Talo Silver, who had 65 yards rushing on 13 carries for Marshfield.

After North Bend won the coin toss, they chose Marshfield to have the first chance at the end zone. Tedder scored on the second play of the overtime series on an option keeper. He kicked the extra point through the uprights and drew a roughing the kicker penalty from North Bend. That pushed the start of North Bend’s possession back to the 40-yard line.

Two crucial false start penalties and a sack by Bo Cutting and Jesse Moore later, North Bend faced fourth-and-23 and Iveans’ pass was snagged by Tedder, ending one of the closest Civil War games in recent history.

North Bend’s Lucero, who rushed for 112 yards on 20 carries, felt they competed well with their rivals, and wanted another chance.

“I think let’s schedule another game,” Lucero said.

North Bend coach Rick Taylor knew the Bulldogs had their chance to end the longtime losing streak.

“I thought they played incredibly hard. I thought we had some chances,” Taylor said. “You’ve got to capitalize on all your opportunities. There were a few times we didn’t do that.”

Iveans, who ran 13 times for 22 yards, said that Marshfield was a talented team, but just wished for a different outcome.

“We went out there and played our hearts out,” Iveans said. “It just didn’t go our way.”

Tedder, a senior who was happy to win at his last chance against the Bulldogs, had a hand in all three Marshfield scores. He ran for 69 yards, including a touchdown to cap Marshfield’s opening drive, and threw for 159 more yards, including a 19-yard touchdown to Chris Krajcir.

He said that earning the close victory showed the Pirates can flourish in high-pressure situations.

“A win’s a win. We’ve got to go back to work next week,” Tedder said.

Ainsworth was happy to get his first victory under his belt as the new coach. He didn’t want to let the winning streak die.

“We wanted to maintain that streak,” Ainsworth said. “North Bend is a tough opponent who plays hard and is well-coached.

“It’s better to be lucky than good in this case.”
