Walla Walla passes on CB city manager

Wednesday, September 02, 2009 |
Coos Bay’s city council didn’t have to begin searching for a new city manager Tuesday night. Chuck Freeman, who had been in the running for the city manager post in Walla Walla, Wash., didn’t get the job.
The city of 57,000 announced Tuesday it wanted to hire the city administrator of Washougal, Wash. The Walla Walla City Council will consider an agreement with Nabiel Shawa at its meeting tonight.
The city had narrowed its search to seven finalists, including Freeman. He visited the Eastern Washington city last week for a public reception and interview.
He was the only finalist from outside Washington, though he managed the city of Airport Heights in that state before coming to Coos Bay in 2007.
At Tuesday’s council meeting, Councilors Stephanie Kramer, Mark Daily and Joanie Johnson said they were happy Freeman was remaining with the city.
“We’ve got a lot on the table,” said Mark Daily. “I think he has handled things very capably and I’m glad he’s staying on.”
Freeman, Mayor Jeff McKeown and the other councilors said nothing about Walla Walla’s decision.
