Mak’s Old City Hall Lounge has at least a two-month reprieve in its battle to keep its liquor license.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission has asked an administrative law judge to review his recommendation to close the bar, based on new evidence provided by the local OLCC inspector.

Mak’s owners had requested copies of a recording from a Dec. 28, 2007, intervention meeting of the owners, inspector Gary Francis and Coos Bay police officials.

They had been told the recording was lost, but when Francis re-examined his computer files in July, he discovered a downloaded copy of the recording.

Christie Scott, an OLCC spokeswoman, said the commission tentatively had scheduled a discussion of Mak’s license at its October meeting. But the issue may be extended further if the judge hasn’t had time to review the case by then.

“Everything is on their time schedule,” she said.

The nightclub faces several allegations, the most serious being the number of times police have responded to alcohol-related calls. Coos Bay police had documented more than 85 responses to Mak’s and the surrounding area from June 2008 to July 2009, more than all other Coos Bay bars combined.

But the bar owners’ lawyer has said his clients should face only a fine due to their cooperation with police and efforts they've made to reduce problems, such as installing security cameras. He also has said some of the calls stem from incidents outside the bar, caused by men who were denied access to Mak’s.

Keep Mak's open... define 85 calls for service. Does this mean the bar called, a patron called, or the police where in the neighborhood watching.
