Question: What is the law about dogs off the leash at Bastendorff and Horsfall beaches?

Answer: A dog must be under its owner’s control by a leash or voice commands, said Calum Stevenson at the Oregon Parks Department.

“Quite a few dogs are out there running around,” he said. “If they get too bothersome, they really aren’t under control.”

Dogs can harass wildlife and that can create problems, Stevenson said.

Beach visitors must  clean up their dogs’ waste, because it can be considered offensive littering.

I was the person who asked this question and I am glad I have some clarification. I happen to be lucky enough to own a very good dog that has been trained to listen to my commands. She has never approached anyone at the beach unless I stop to talk to them. Unfortunately though, many dogs/owners don't seem to understand the basic rule of giving someone their personal space. I noticed a dramatic increase this summer and now only go there very early in the morning to avoid the crowds. When summer is over, the same people I always see walking with their dogs will be there. We will be able to walk our dogs off leash and in peace. I am very relieved to know that I can take my dog to the beach without having to worry about the 'dog catcher'.

Let's just keep kids and dogs off the beach. Problem solved.

Keep your dogs on a leash. Period.

Its fine to bring them to the beach, but clean up after them and put them on a leash.

kids and dogs are not in the same category.
kids and people should be able to enjoy the beach.
if you dont like kids then you dont like people and you should stay home.
dogs are dogs.
if you have a good dog take it places.
if you have a bad dog don't.

I just wish people would keep their kids under control. I tell them not to call her over and scratch her ears, but they just have to make over her, and undermine my control of her on the beach. It is everyone’s beach. You don’t like my dog their, well I don’t like you making over her every time I go to the beach. Get the point.

Really? Leave your dogs at home? Why don't you leave your kids home so I don't have to hear them whining and crying?! My dogs LOVE the beach and going there is one of our favorite activities. It's also is a great way for them to run. It is a dog owners responsibilty, just like a parents, to keep them under control. Why do you have to be so nasty. The world does not belong to just you...

Please leave your dog home. If I wanted a dog jumping all over me or biting one of my kids I would go visit an animal shelter. I should not have to carry a large stick while at the beach because of people not being able to keep control of their dog.
