COOS BAY — Skaters aren’t the only people who appreciate the new skate park in Mingus Park. Some nearby neighbors like it, too.

Yvonne Budiselich enjoys knowing local children have a place to go to while away their last few weeks of summer vacation. Paul Taylor said he thinks there’s been less noise since the new park opened in May. And Carol Young listens to the sounds of wheels rolling around the park bowls and smiles. It reminds her of the sound of downhill skiing.

“The sound hypnotizes me,” she said. “I can see how they love it.”

That’s not to say there haven’t been some problems. Police have responded to between 20 and 30 calls since the park opened. They’ve included calls about loud music, minors with alcohol and reports of marijuana use. Coos Bay police Capt. Cal Mitts said he doesn’t condone everything that has happening there, but it’s not unexpected.

“It’s a new local spot for kids to be around,” he said. “We’ve been monitoring it and continue to do that.”

Police are getting some help from a $35,400 federal Department of Justice grant to install surveillance cameras around the park.

City Manager Chuck Freeman said the city will put cameras in the skating area as well as other places in the park, such as the restrooms. Police dispatchers will be able to watch the park, and once equipment has been installed in cruisers, officers on duty will, too.

“I think the cameras will be a huge help,” Freeman said.

So does Rick Gladden, a neighbor who hasn’t enjoyed the upgraded skate park.

“I just think it was the wrong location to put a skate park,” he said.

He has spoken to people in Reedsport, who told him surveillance cameras cut down on problems in a skate park there. Still, Gladden is disappointed the city chose to build the new skate park in the same location as the old one. He has noticed more vandalism in the area since the park opened, and noise from the park wakes him at night.

He suggested the city could have put the park along the waterfront. He suggested the old McAuley Hospital will be harder to develop because of its proximity to the skate park.

Taylor, who has lived across the street from the park for the past four years, said he hears the skaters, but it hasn’t been bad. Before the new park was built, he’d hear people skating at 1 in the morning. That doesn’t happen anymore.

“It’s actually been better, whatever they’ve got going,” he said.

The South Coast Softball Association, which plays its games next to the skate park, hasn’t had any problems with skaters, said commissioner Don Ross. Sometimes a home run ball will mysteriously vanish, but nothing significant has ever developed between the two groups, he said.

Young is concerned about skaters who don’t wear helmets, and Budiselich noted that some kids don’t look when riding to the park. But having a new facility is a good thing, they said.

“They need to have something to do,” said Young. “It’s up to the kids to take care of it.”

cubachris - Let's be fair. The City of Coos Bay has already given out helmets to the kids in Coos Bay. What about the kids in North Bend? Helmets and /or gear should be taken to Sunset Sports at Pony Village Mall and given to Sheryl or Jack. They know the North Bend kids really well. They will be sure that kids get them that really need them. They have gone out of their way and spent a lot of time helping my kids and many other kids in our neighborhood with their skateboard stuff. I don't think the owner of the Pirate skate shop should hand out helmets to the kids from North Bend because she might ask the kids why they aren't buying stuff from her and they shouldn't have to deal with that.

Then I guess if they are smoking "weed" then you can call the police because that is against the law.
I wouldn't advise calling in front of them tho for your safety....

hey its me wrote on Aug 28, 2009 3:04 PM:

To 1313- So I take my kids to the skatepark and what do I do when the high school kids smoke there cigarettes and weed in front of my kids?....pretend it isn't happening? I don't want my kids around that enviroment. This park was supposed to be for all ages, but it's a bad enviroment for the younger kids to be around and no one is doing anything about it.

1313 wrote on Aug 28, 2009 7:43 AM:

The skate park is a wonderful place for the kids to skate, and they do need a place, BUT COME ON PARENTS, SPEND A LITTLE TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN AND COME ON DOWN AND DO A LITTLE TIME THERE WATCHING WHAT GOES ON.....
You cannot expect the police or anyone else to watch over YOUR CHILDREN, YOU need to do it yourself.
Parents (not all) are so into themselves anymore they cannot spend some time with their own children. If your child does a sport of any kind, spend some time being interested in it.

You can also drop of donations at Sunset Sports at Pony Village Mall. Many of the kids go there to shop for skate stuff. They have a big selection of boards, parts etc.

Icare wrote on Aug 26, 2009 12:43 PM:

Moonpenny - you may donate any helmets, knee and arm pads to the city. They do disburse them out, or you can take them to Concrete Pirate Skate Shop on 101.

Icare wrote on Aug 26, 2009 12:25 PM:

Rebecca1....get a life, would you. Now if the park is blown up...we will know exactly who did it....you threatened! I don't think you have spent much time at the park, have you? I spend a lot of time there. I love watching the kids skate, in fact I like to skate. There are some awesome kids that go there, not just the ones that smoke, etc. You just don't want change or a skate park. You are one of those that think skateboarding is a crime. it's a sport - have you watched X-games?

Icare wrote on Aug 26, 2009 12:18 PM:

I am a mother of a skater.....if you are the parent you should be, you would have raised your kids to be polite, not smoke, do drugs, etc. I go there all the time and "police" the park - trash, loud offensive language-- Obviously there are many parents that do not give a >>> about what their kids do. Closing the park down is not an option. They will just go somewhere else and then you be complaining about that too. Be glad they aren't skating on the sidewalks and parking lots all over town!!!!!

truthtellerschitlan wrote on Aug 25, 2009 5:10 PM:

I actually have driven by the park many times and have seen young kids and their parents. In fact my husband rides bikes w/my son and goes down there and watch. Be real people bad stuff goes on around and in the area of the football games too etc. And as for the helmet issue, that is an issue but shouldn't be the responsibility of the "city" maybe the police should enforce the law. This isn't happening only at the skate park, but several kids (the same ones and little ones at that) up and down the street of Blossom Gulch AND ride in the street w/traffic coming up and down!

hey its me wrote on Aug 25, 2009 11:52 AM:

A lot of younger kids still aren't wearing helmets either and nothing is being done about it. It's the city's park so the city should be more involved instead of looking the other way. Someday some kid is going to get really hurt and then the city will want to close the park. We need city staff that will work for us, not turn their back on the issues.

TruthTeller wrote on Aug 25, 2009 11:15 AM:

Hey Steve, and the soccer players, baseball, football etc don't do anything wrong right. Heck they're probably the ones suppling the pot etc. Come on people get a clue, it probably does need to be more supervised, but that's not going to stop them. They'll still find a place to hide. Heck I did when I was a kid.

Steve Pickering wrote on Aug 24, 2009 5:06 PM:

My wife was raised within sight of that park up on the hill. I have some fond memories of her and I taking walks and me stealing a kiss or two in that park back in ’66 and ’67. I don’t hold the ill will you have and I am sure my wife doesn’t either, and she has been here for all but four years of her life.

They (the skaters) deserve a recreational place just as much as any soccer player, baseball player, swimmer, or tennis player. My only beef is their insistent breaking of the rules. I guess it must be a skater dude thing, but they better learn, or it is a real possibility they could lose it. Police your own or else.

hey its me wrote on Aug 24, 2009 4:32 PM:

The kids are still being loud and rude (bad language), there's under age drinking and cigarette smoking at the park and then there's the pot smokers. Some smoke their pot right there at the skatepark and others go up behind the gardens in the park. You rarely see any parents there as other people have mentioned. It's a nice park, but it's also a place for all of the kids with nothing to do, to go where they aren't supervised by anyone. My kids aren't allowed to hang out there and won't be, until it can become more of a positive environment for all age kids. Why do we need to install cameras if the city isn't going to do anything about the issues going on there?

The Brutal Truth wrote on Aug 24, 2009 2:07 PM:

REBECCA,

You've made yourself 100% clear on the matter.

You think a skatepark is ruining your old neighborhood. Everything was swell and just like the good ol' 50's & 60's up until this was built.

Got it.

Rebecca1 wrote on Aug 24, 2009 12:24 PM:

To the Brutal Truth: You just do not understand & probably never will, so I won't waste much time here, but growing up there in the 50's & 60's it's a real heart breaker, plus, I have friends that still live there...............

The Brutal Truth wrote on Aug 24, 2009 8:42 AM:

Wow REBECCA, you don't even live next to it, yet you'd still like to "blow it up"? Take a valium, will ya?

I'm happy for these kids. Just because they aren't involved in "stick & ball" conventional sports, doesn't mean they shouldn't have their own place, too.

Barack Obama wrote on Aug 24, 2009 8:36 AM:

Lets just go ahead and put camera everywhere. Then we won't have any problems ever. Right?

Rebecca1 wrote on Aug 23, 2009 8:59 PM:

I know if I moved back to my childhood neighborhood, I would have to really spend alot of time trying to contain myself to not go out there in the middle of the night to blow that place up, & I am yet to see a child there that I would want any of my 3 kids to be associated with, certainly it has lowerd property values & increased Homeowner's Insurance?

TruthTeller wrote on Aug 21, 2009 11:08 AM:

Some people have to find something to complain about, and Pignuts tell that to the NBPD.

Fed Up wrote on Aug 20, 2009 8:41 PM:

Just an observer, as you are obviously looking for any angle to try to get a pity party for Mak's, and you mention the stein room and the elks lodge... do me a favor... contact the Coos Bay Police Department and ask how many times the police have been called to the elks or the stein room, hell, even throw in the Eagles lodge while you're at it... and I absolutely guarantee Mak's has had more calls in one weekend than any of those other three combined for the past 5 years... probably even 10 years. Give it a shot if you think I'm joking.

Mr E wrote on Aug 20, 2009 5:34 PM:

Wow, the accusation toward patrons of Mak's is limited to marijuana use (a citation), loud music (a citation), and potential MIP in a public place (a slap on the wrist for the minor, a significant penalty for the purveyors of the alcohol)?

Aside from the clear differences between a public park and a private establishment that has a license to follow the rules of selling alcohol in the state of Oregon, I'd say there are rather significant differences in the severity of complaints. When we see bi-weekly reports of skateboarders using their boards to attack other skateboarders, THEN we can talk about a comparison.

Pig Nuts wrote on Aug 20, 2009 5:07 PM:

You want to put cameras up in the public restrooms?

Knock yourself out!

Cameras are the lazy mans law enforcement. Bad boys bad boys whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do about it?

So you watch a crime go down on TV, so what, how does that help the person the crime is perpetrated against?

You can't take shortcuts. You want the job done right, put a cop on foot to patrol the area, otherwise you can film all the crime you want & send it in for the rest of sit at home beer drinking America to watch.

m00npenny wrote on Aug 20, 2009 3:54 PM:

In spite of the "big brother crowd" whining about cameras, I think its a great idea. People in general will act on their best if they know they are being recorded. I love the idea of this park. It belongs to the kids, cuz your not going to catch my 40 something self out there .. haha. All joking aside, is there an agency or someone who is collecting helmets and/or other safety equipment that I can donate to? There could be a sign posted that no one skates without a helmet? Just an idea.

1313 wrote on Aug 20, 2009 2:38 PM:

Maybe some parents could accompany their kids there sometimes and stay around and watch what goes on. I am a little surprised that sometimes when I drive by there, there are younger kids there and no parents around. I would think if my young child was there skating, I would be there watching just in case they fell or any other trouble that might happen, did happen.

Obiwan wrote on Aug 20, 2009 2:37 PM:

LOL, I was thinking the same thing as Observer when I got to the sentence with the amounts of calls including ILLEGAL drug use! Time to shut the park down CBPD....you know before someone gets seriously injured or killed down there. Gotta love open displays of public power abuse and harassment.

Just An Observer wrote on Aug 20, 2009 12:19 PM:

20 to 30 calls since being opened? Oh my, I guess the CBPD will be calling for the skate park to close any day now...LOL! I guess if you are not named Mak's you are fine even if many similar types of offenses are taking place.

Put those cameras in downtown CB too. It's not only Mak's that needs a watchful eye, it's the whole business ditrict and also the other two places in downtown CB (Elks, Stein Room) where alcohol is served and intoxicated people come out of, some of them with car keys ready to go.
