Some listen, but don't seek facts

Never have I witnessed so many disciples of Fox News and conservative talk radio congregated in one place as I did at Rep. Peter DeFazio's North Bend town hall meeting.

Ignorant of fact, allegiant to distortion and rank falsehood, one questioner after another revealed the hard right's mastery in utilizing working class anger and frustration, bigotry, paranoia about "government," and selfish pride to serve the Republican Party's and corporate America's selfish interests.

We heard how House Resolution 3200 would cause patients to "lose their autonomy."  Private insurance companies would be driven out of business. One person asked, why the rush? Stop trying to pass bills in the "middle of the night." A woman wearing surgical scrubs proudly proclaimed she had worked hard to get where she was and she didn't want to pay health care for people "who don't get off their butts." A woman with a long ponytail Ñ years ago a child of a family of 16 Ñ declared that she supported HR 3200.  Reacting to the angry crowd murmur, she declared that she was a Republican. Someone in the very back of the room shouted, "No, you're not!"

We heard about how HR 3200 required "mandatory counseling," i.e. end of life information, hospice, advance directives; that HR 3200 covered abortion; that it covered illegal aliens. One man thought that the 10th Amendment made congressional legislation of health care illegal. A woman stated that we were headed toward socialized medicine and that, heaven forbid, we would end up with a Canadian system. A man said that the wording of HR 3200 was vague. Obama's "Marxist administration" would twist its wording to nefarious advantage.

How much did Rep. DeFazio's forthright, accurate responses resonate? I had the impression that the majority attending were impervious to fact. That is because Fox News and hate-talk radio, they have been told, tell it straight!

Hey did you hear the new news! The health plan is now a secret plan to ruin Christmas, and make old people eat the Easter Bunny.

There seems to be a lot of secrets about Health Care and where a majority of the Stimulus Money went to.

One that is similar to Confederate States and the Union.

Barrack, "hate" is such a strong and nasty word. I happen to enjoy watching FOX along with CNN to get their varying takes on things. Anymore, I don't see as much difference as there once was. As for some of the other cable news networks I don't waste my time, as it seems most others don't either.
Love your country-don't trust government.

You assume that there is this great organization within the Republican Party. I think you are mistaken. There are no marching orders. Just because these people don't want this health care plan doesn't mean they are Fox News "disciples". I hate Fox News and I hate this health care plan. I don't go out and call you a MSNBC "disciple", so don't assume that others are marching to Fox News orders.

You're right "pril"
Some of us don't have our heads - you know where - while others need a little nudge to wake up.

Oliver, nobody should need a book to figure out how both parties abuse us and incite us to abuse each other. It's pretty obvious to some people without reading Beck's book. I've never read his book (or seen his show or paid any attention to him) and to me it's plain as day. Dems vs Repubs, the new Crips and Bloods. What tribe are you? Where you from? Tune the parties out and smell the crap sandwich they're feeding everyone. Being a member of one party or the other does not make you a better or smarter human. It means you're easily led and easily fed.

NoGod wrote on Aug 23, 2009 1:25 PM:

I'd use Beck's book for TP but nothing else.. No instead I read intellectual books by intellectual people like Noam Chomsky,Howard Zinn,Peter Singer,Chalmers Johnson etc etc...If I wanted to read a book by a Nazi I'd read Mein Kampf.

oliver woods wrote on Aug 23, 2009 1:05 PM:

Just wondering if folks like "nogod" have the cajones to read Beck's book. I would guess not because it might give them a clue as to how the world is really working, how both parties abuse us, and they would not be able to admit their shallowness.

NoGod wrote on Aug 22, 2009 12:03 PM:

It's ok most of the imbreds who watch Fox News or listen to Nazi filled hate radio i.e. Limbaugh and Beck will soon die off..It all boils down to one thing and one thing only.

Obama is an Ivy League American Born Citizen who is also half Black and it scares the hell out of old white people..They tend to forget that his grandparents were sweet old white people from Kansas..

So Harold has all the facts and anyone that opposes this bill is an idiot.
Poor Harold, he has much to learn and it will be a costly lesson if this wonderful plan is passed. He is living proof the dupes are alive and well but not for long with the new health care plan.

oliver woods wrote on Aug 22, 2009 8:22 AM:

My goodness. If I have ever witnessed an example of the pot calling the kettle black it is Harold's rant. This is a very sad example of closeted loyalty to a party.

"Love your Country, but never trust your Government." is credited to Robert Novak, a respected journalist on the Washington scene who had far more insight into our national politics than those posting here, or political pundits who are payed to sway opinion.

Try reading Glenn Beck's book, "Common Sense" if you have the cajones to do so. It might surprise many of Harold's ilk that it jumps all over both Dems and Reps and points out how we are manipulated and abused by govt.

marymoonbeam wrote on Aug 22, 2009 7:57 AM:

Harold, you are a total idealogue whose obvious mindset is to vilify anyone who does not agree with your closed minded opinion of the world.
The upside for you is that you are preaching to so many in the choir residing in the socialist County of Coos. Most of us see it otherwise.
I agree with Hiram1999 that you obviously have not done your homework other than snatching onto the speaking points of the Dems.
The health issue aside, why do you and your like-minded not consider the fiscal aspect of the issue. The only folks telling us that it is financially responsible are those promoting the plan. Economists, CBO, yesterday's report that increased cost to the nation by this plan is an addtional 2 trillion (have you and like-minded folks considered that sum?) are the one's that we should be paying attention to. Such debt is non-sustainable to our nation, and if you think things are tough in Coos County now, you ain't see anything of what is to come when the nation goes broke.

Hiram1999 wrote on Aug 21, 2009 7:22 AM:

Harold, I read the bill three times. I tried to keep an open mind and sought to understand what I was reading. I consider myself as educated and intelligent as the people voting on this bill. Harold, I don't understand the bill and I doubt that you do either. The questions asked as the town halls are very legitimate and if many of the provisions of this bill don't give you pause, then I suggest that you aren't paying attention.

Kay wrote on Aug 20, 2009 6:59 PM:

But Harold, you're trying to tie rational discourse with irrational, underinformed, racist, bigoted citizens who have stopped thinking for themselves.

They are not going to listen to the truth no matter how many times you show them facts.

Unbelievaable isn't it?

Thank you.

You hit the nail on the head. Fear is a powerful motivator. Facts, they just get in the way.

Mr. Titus, I am just curious, have you actually read all 1000+ pages of the health bill and if so did you understand the whole thing ? Just wondering ????
And do you think we don't have the right to get upset at things that affect our lives ????
And do you think if we stand up to things we don't agree with, we are being
unamerican?????
I guess we could stay home, shutup and bury our heads in the sand .....
