GRANTS PASS — U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio ran into a buzzsaw of fear and misinformation about federal health care reform proposals Wednesday on his first day of town hall meetings during the Congressional recess.

At a stop in Grants Pass, the Springfield Democrat repeatedly had to call for quiet and correct people on what the proposed legislation actually says regarding end-of-life care, illegal aliens and other issues.

DeFazio noted that the bill before the House has Medicare pay for the elderly to talk to their doctor about what kind of care they want at the end of their lives. He characterized fears that it would promote euthanasia as “phony arguments.”

He added that the current bill notes in two places that illegal aliens will not be covered — a fear raised numerous times.

Despite DeFazio’s assurances to the contrary, one man repeatedly said he was convinced that Medicare would not pay for a new pacemaker to keep him alive after he turns 80.

“It was hot,” DeFazio said afterward of the meeting atmosphere. “I think there was general consensus that there are problems with the insurance system and people want to see those things fixed. They are worried we will go too far and make things worse instead of better, and I think that is a legitimate concern.”

He told the crowd several times that the proposals continue to change, and he has yet to decide how he will vote.

Joyce McGuffin of Grants Pass stood up in the meeting and said, “We have been pretty rude.

“I hope you get the right message and take it back to Washington. We are not terrorists. We are for reform. But we do not want the government controlling our health care.”

Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson said extra deputies and police were on hand, and that the fire marshal let in only 152 people before the room’s capacity was met.

Outside, more than 100 people held signs in support and opposition to health care reform, and chanted slogans.

Inside, several people voiced support for expanding health care coverage, and a few came up to DeFazio afterward to thank him for facing a hostile crowd.

The Grants Pass stop was the third of his day and one of 14 DeFazio has scheduled over the next week in his district, including visits to Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford and North Bend.

Each US Citizen should be voting on this and elected officials should defer to them. Senator or Respresentative or not. I don't care. This issue is too critical and should not be left up to them.

Mikethebear,

Should we shut down our own hospice here in town, because that is what they do? Are they bad people? It sure seems that way from your comments. Maybe we should all protest at the local hospice!!!!

If real republicans want to keep the government out of things like health care they need to do something to demonstrate they are really serious. Maybe advocate shutting down the existing socialist health care programs like VA Hospitals and Medicare! We need legislation to allow these people to opt out of the VA program, Medicare and Social Security, it would then be easy to count them and we would see who is serious and who is just full of it.
Get those “Shut down the Socialist VA and Medicare” banners made and show up at those town hall meetings. I’ll be looking for you.

Since you are obviously jumping up and down in support of this public option why don’t YOU tell us exactly what the plan entails, start with the following:
What are the premiums?
What is covered?
What are the exclusions?
What are the copays?
What will be subject to utilization review?
Would YOU be willing to buy an insurance policy that was this vague?
I seriously doubt it.
Are you going to be disappointed if the “private option” ends up requiring you to pay at least $5000 out of pocket each year AND buy a supplemental policy (like Medicare does if you want any real coverage) for several thousand on top of that?
The only specifics in any of these plans pertain to expansion of entitlements (Medicaid) and CUTS to Medicare….As to the specifics of the “public option” there are none.

So what you are saying "Observer" is that all the information being put out by proponents of "Healthcare Reform" are on the up and up? I am just asking because I do not know.

From my point of view. Any program that makes a suggestion to die quickly if you are sick, is just well sick.

Yeah they do, but some of them have a right to be angry. Our government needs to let US decide what we want instead of dictating to us. That's what makes me angry. Let us give some idea's, we are the poor that need the help the most. And more taxes will certainly not help me.

This misinformation was spread by rightwingnuts via talk radio and email to scare the sheeple. Thankfully it only worked on a few and we didn't have a lynch mob on hand. Keep throwing your distortions out there you rightwingers and every time you do you further discredit yourselves with the folks in the middle. What ever happened to real conservatives? I guess they died off and now it's all Rush all the time these days...LOL!
