South Coast reaches World Series

The South Coast’s 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star team has qualified for the World Series.
The South Coast squad scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Idaho state champions 7-6 in the championship game of the Norhtwest Regional at Moscow, Idaho, on Sunday.
“It’s phenomenal,”said SouthCoast coach John Qualman. “It doesn’t get much better.”
South Coast will play in the 14-year-old World Series at Appleton, Wisc., from Aug. 22-29.
The champions from eight regions nationwide reach the World Series.
South Coast won three of the four games in its pool to reach the semifinals, losing just to South Washington.
On Sunday morning, South Coast beat the North Oregon state champions from Tualatin Hills 11-4 to reach the championship game.
“The first game, we hit the ball really well,” said Qualman of SouthCoast’s rally from an early 4-0 deficit.
In the championship game against Meridian, Idaho, SouthCoast let a 6-3 lead slip away in the top of the seventh inning, but Duke Mitchell came on in relief to get the the final out and set up a dramatic finish.
In the bottom of the inning, Mitchell had a single and then Lucas Qualman hit a double to center to bring in Mitchell with the winning run.
Meanwhile, the South Coast Nationals, a 13- to 15-year-old All-Star team, lost in the semifinals of their regional tournament in Centralia, Wash.
South Coast rallied after losing its first two games to reach the semifinals with a 7-4 win over North Oregon and a 10-0 win over Wyoming.
But on Saturday morning, the South Washington champions from Vancouver topped the Nationals 11-1.
Centralia, the host team, beat South Washington 10-4 in the championship game to advance to the World Series.
The loss ended a great tournament run for the Nationals, said coach Doug Veysey.
“It was so fun for the kids,”Veysey said. “We had a great time.”
A more detailed account of the weekend for the two local teams will be included in Tuesday’s edition of The World.
Meanwhile, the 13-year-old team from Klamath Falls that denied the South Coast all-stars from reaching the regional tournament in that age group advanced to the semifinals at Bozeman, Mont., but lost in that round. Kennewick, Wash., reached the 13-year-old World Series.
